[SIZE=1]I am moving to LA and will be working in downtown LA. What are the BEST places to live with two kids that are 4 and 6 years old. I am originally from San Diego and I live in Carlsbad area. I am looking for a beach town/ suburban that's nice and relaxing. My rent max is $2500.00. I love the Laguna area, but I know its far from LA.

3bd/townhome is well in your rent range. Maybe a house.

Best combination of schools and safety, within say a max 45 minute rush hour drive from downtown LA....

Burbank, South Pasadena, La Crescenta, Temple City, Alhambra.

Parts of Glendale. La Canada and Arcadia might be too pricey.

If schools are not a concern, add in Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Valley Village, Silver Lake, and parts of Los Feliz.

If it must be a beach area I suppose Lakewood and the parts of Long Beach near there, but the drive will be rough.

Also Culver City might suit you and its not far from the beach. If schools aren't a concern, maybe Westchester or Playa Del Rey.

I have been really going towards Los Feliz. But I am not sure what the crime rate is or know much about the city for families.

los feliz is not suburban, certainly not where your budget will allow you to live. i wouldn't trust the public schools either since they are a part of LAUSD.

I've lived in LA proper for 27 years and I love it. I'm single but if I had kids and needed to be in close proximity to downtown I would choose Pasadena or South Pasadena to raise a family. If you are affluent then WLA/Santa Monica but otherwise in WLA you run the risk of feeling like you are in a rat race trying to keep up. Don't get me wrong as a single person LA/WLA is wonderful but families in LA tend to become competitive the farther west they live. Pasadena and South Pasadena seem to have a different vibe however while not having the stigma of the suburbs (i.e., lack of culture, etc.) Just my two cents. Good luck!

One other area that might suit you is Larchmont Village or Hancock Park. It has the same general feel as Pasadena/South Pasadena yet it's located in the heart of the LA.
