While Los Angeles city is not an option for raising a family, Glendale, Burbank, South Pasadena, El Segundo, Torrance, and parts of Long Beach and Santa Monica are good places.

i would second the recommendation for Long Beach communities like Signal Hill or Bluff Heights if you can deal with the commute which will be nearly an hour each way. Montrose & La Crescenta are okay too if you want to keep your commutes manageable.

What about Metrolink/Amtrak? Goes to downtown.

Is Carlsbad to DLA on a train out of the question? What about Long Beach/Los Alamitos using the blue line?
