Can you guys help us get a grip on what's what with LA?
Which areas are safe? Expensive (I know-- all!) How long it takes to get from place to place eg. Santa Monica to Pasadena. If you worked in Santa Monica, and you're a couple w kids, where to live?
Need more real info about commute times from Santa Monica to where people live, but I don't know where people live vs. industrial areas and such.
so-- Pasadena is (fill in the blank)
Santa Monica is (fill in the blank)
Culver City is ....
Hollywood is...
West Hollywood is...

If this works out, I do not want to be outside w baby girl and get shot at.
We are middle class kids.

Thanks for all of your help! Poking around at stuff in case it all comes together, so that I have my ground work.

Crime in LA is at the lowest level since the the 1950's. You'll be fine.

Take a look at these links to get comparative neighborhood crime data:

No kidding.

And no you don't work in Santa Monica and live in Pasadena.

I think you would do better in Boise.

Pasadena to Santa Monica ... if your commute is for normal working hours ... I'd say about 90 minutes to 2 hours each way.

If you had to, take the Gold Line to downtown, then SMBBB #10.

I think people keep asking about Pasadena, even though its a big ass drive to Santa Monica, because they hear Pasadena is a nice area and look at house prices in the northwest area and say to themselves "oh we can afford that".

People really need to stick to the idea that if its too good to be true, it probably is.

The bottom line is that currently if you want a safe neighborhood with ok schools(6's and 7's for middle and high school on school performance charts) its going to cost $325-400K to buy a 3bd/2ba 1500 sq ft home built prior to 1970 and you are looking at a very ethnicly diverse neighborhood like Lakewood, Whittier, La Habra, West Covina, etc OR IE, Simi Valley, TO, Santa Clarita.
