Isn't intellectual liberal an oxymoron?

Funny, when I think of intellectualism, somehow Bob Jones University doesn't seem to have the same panache as, say, Berkeley...

I would suggest Santa Cruz, although that's more central/nor-cal. I can't really think of a similar environment in Socal. Berkeley, for that matter, is nice, it's just more expensive.

Orange County on down to San Diego is more Reagan-conservative, and so is Santa Barbara... tough to say, really :/

Things aren’t quite that hopeless because there are more divergent views in South (Orange) County these days.

Laguna Beach is definitely liberal, but it’s not a college town. There are bright people of all political persuasions in Aliso Viejo (adjacent to Laguna Beach); and no one hassles you because of your beliefs. Again, it’s not a college town, but it’s a very small & hilly city (9.2 sq. miles and about 42K people) with a Buddhist university, walking and jogging trails, coffee shops, a large movie complex, a health center, fresh produce markets, a golf course, lots of parks, a bookstore and a vibrant town center. No one in the city lives more than about 2.5 miles away from Town Center. I think the OP would feel very comfortable here since AV is very walkable and conveniently located.
