Hello,

My friend and I are looking to share an apartment (2 bed 2 bath) staying around $1900 near our respective schools USC FIDM. We are not from LA or even the west coast we will be visiting in March so any suggestions where to look would be helpful.

Thanks!

-Downtown Los Angeles
-Miracle Mile (neighrorhood of Los Angeles, see below)
Miracle Mile, Los Angeles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are other areas you can consider but as undergrads I assume you will both want to be pretty close to campus.

Downtown LA is a about 10 minutes to USC and FIDM is in Downtown LA. Miracle Mile is about a 15 to 20 minute drive to both.

Both Downtown and Miracle Mile have lots of college students and 20-somethings living there, as well as many other diverse people (artists, musicians, students, professionals, out of work actors, etc.)

I'd look at downtown too, in fact right around FIDM. There are many shuttles and buses to take you from there south on Figueroa to USC.

I would start your search on Craigslist. This will generally give you a broad idea of what's available in your desired area. Also you can set a price range in your search and the amount of bedrooms etc. A lot of leasing offices post on this site, but you can also find sublets or independant landlords that aren't as established as well known apartment communities. You should be able to get pretty good deal on a great apartment downtown because there seems to be a lot of inventory.

At that price point, for a two bedroom apartment, I think that The Metropolitan is going to be easiest. The FIDM student will have a 2 minute walk to school, theres a Ralphs across the street(and a nice one at that) as well as a Coffee Bean, Robeks, and many restaurants really close. I'm not sure about getting to USC...theres a train line right nearby and its probably a ten minute bike ride. I'm sure there are USC students living there.

The other affordable options for a 2 bedroom are at the Promenade Towers and other places on Bunker Hill. Those are about a mile further away and are not really in walking distance of amenities.

The building I live in is just a block away from the Metropolitan but it presents problems. 2 bedrooms run in the $2500 a month range. There are quite large places at just under $2K/mo(over 1000 sq ft), but they are open models so privacy would be an issue. There are smaller ones at under $1600 a month(850 sq ft or so) that would accomodate 2 people, but again, privacy issues. BTW, in general I'd take negative reviews with a grain of salt. People write negative reviews for issues that don't really have any affect on normal rentors. For instance, the Barry Shy owned properties in downtown have horrible reviews. While some criticism is justified, much of it is people who don't like the ethical slant of the business practices of the owner. With the Met, many of the negative reviews are from FIDM students who went through FIDM's housing placement and they are upset they didn't get the particular unit they wanted. Again, something that wouldn't affect a person going through the normal rental process.

Thank you for the additional information. We have been searching craigslist everyday in hopes of coming across something that suits both of us.
