Hi everybody. I'm Colin. I am new to the forums..I'm 19, and I started going to school in Chicago..(living in the south loop), but didn't feel right about the school. I am now going to go to Santa Monica College, and then hopefully UCLA.

I have been looking for an apartment with my parents lately. (Online, I'm from Illinois), and have come across several different apartments that we are interested.

I will say that I am a musician, but I am moving there mostly for the high quality education that exists. I'm not your typical "rock star wannabe"(I mean it would be nice haha). With that being said, I would love to be in an area that has plenty of things going on. Also, I want the safest area I can find..while not being too much of a hassle from school. (I am fine with commuting because I will have a car)

Here are the apartments addresses.

1519 6th Street, Suite 100, Santa Monica, CA 90401 (Another location is in between Santa Monica Blvd and Broadway on 4th Street)
Would it be safe to bike from here to Santa Monica College?

1600 Vine Apartments
1600 Vine Street Los Angeles, CA 90028
Is this the kinda sketchy area of hollywood?

and Lastly.
7950 West Sunset
7950 West Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90046
I know this is not exactly the real happening area of Sunset, but is it safe?

Thanks everybody!

Those are all three safe locations.

Hollywood probably has more "sketchy" areas than Santa Monica. That said, the locations you are looking at are all fine.

Going back to when you were just a kid (10 to 15 years ago) 1600 Vine was a more sketchy area to put it mildly. Now they've built a new W Hotel with luxury condos on top at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. One of the benchwarmers for the Lakers (Sasha V) bought a multi-million dollar condo there. The area has really cleaned up....

Your Santa Monica choice is in a very safe area..... But it's kind of a long ride to smc. Up hill the whole way there. Going back is no big deal.

The only location is the Hollywood one, but that is safe, and very convenient. Noisy, though. And very posh; isn't that one of the really expensive posh new buildings? In any case, it's not the sketchy part of Hollywood.

Yeah, Vine doesn't get really sketchy until around Fountain, with the said sketchiness peaking around Santa Monica. Conversely, the further east you go, the worst it gets. Vine/Hollywood itself was fairly sketchy, but these days, luxury developments and gentrification has pushed the sketch "border" to around Bronson, with it becoming much more noticeable east of the 101.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far!

Would all of these areas be very walkable?

I will have a car, but it would be nice to walk alot too.

*Meaning, are there lots of shops, restaurants, music venues, etc. in close proximity to these apartments?**

Yes...for all three locations.

The 1600 Vine location is next to a Metro Red Line (subway) station.

All three locations are pretty nice.

The Santa Monica location is at the heart of downtown Santa Monica, walking distance to a ton of restaurants, shops, the beach, and the Third Street Promenade and mall. It's very safe to bike there from SMC. Just be wary of the area by 7th Street and Colorado, it's a congregation for homeless and druggies, and would be about a block and a half away from this apartment.

The Vine location has lately become the most densely patrolled area by LAPD in town. From around 9 pm till 2 am most nights you can't go a block without seeing cop cars. That's probably because of the large concentration of clubs in that area. It's walking distance to anything you need, including fun nightlife.

The Sunset location is in the least seedy part of Hollywood, near the border to West Hollywood. There are some strange people around there but it's pretty much safe. Your issue may be running more into eccentrics than criminals. And of course you have the Sunset Strip and an endless array of businesses on Sunset Boulevard.
