if you're an undergrad, stay on campus & take advantage of the dorms & meal plans! Housing in Westwood is fairly expensive, even in this economy. Plus finding parking (and paying for it) is a pain. If you're a grad student, also look at the university-owned apartments. My friend stayed in one on Venice in Palms/CC during her 1st two yrs of med school and it was very convenient since they had shuttles to campus running in the morning & at night. Other friends who've done graduate studies have lived in Westwood south of Wilshire ($$$), in Sawtelle area, Culver City/Palms/Mar Vista, and even West Hollywood (also $$$). If you can, definitely try to find a roomie to share expenses! good luck.

What is your price range? Will you have access to a car? Are you willing to try riding mass transit or ride a bike? The Westside is, in general, pricey, but you'll find that prices fall the further south you go. Palms is very popular with UCLA students and you can rent a room for about $700-$900 a month (depending on amenities and the availability of parking.) Undergrads make living in North Westwood Village feasible by sharing rooms. If you want to live somewhere suburban and safe, consider Sherman Oaks, the Valley suburb over the Hill. Sherman Oaks can still be pricey for some, but you get a lot more space and amenities per dollar compared to some neighborhoods popular with UCLA students on the Westside. (And I know there are some Valley haters on this board. I'm just laying the options out there.)
