My partner and I live on LI, have two children, and would like to move to an area in Suffolk that is liberal leaning, more accepting of diversity, and also has good schools nearby (public or private). Right now, we're in a more conservative area, and don't feel like its the best fit for us.
Huntington Village vicinity is very appealing to us, but we'd like some feedback from current/past residents as to their opinions about how they think we'd fit in there as lesbian couple with kids (3 and 12), and what the better schools are there.
Also, open to other suggestions as to good towns to relocate to, that might fit our needs. Thanks!

Huntington Village is fine. I might also check out Stony Brook, Sayville and maybe even Sound Beach area.

IMHO you'll fit in just fine; the closer to downtown Huntington, commonly called "Village", the better
I live in Ridge & our neighbors and close friends have a similar family situation to yours, they are friendly with bi-racial, 2 mom family with one young child that live in Rocky Point.
I think Sayville would be very welcoming too.
Stony Brook Setauket -- Three Village schools. No hopping downtown like Huntington so we head to Port Jeff or Smithtown. Unlike Huntington, there's no worrying about which area to avoid to avoid a certain school.
The area is democratic, liberal leaning with a lot of professionals, BNL and SUNY people. Definitely an area which is accepting of gay and lesbian couples.
I agree with Elke that Huntington would be a good fit, but if you're close to downtown HUntington, you are talking about district #3, and there's really no way to assure yourself of ONLY going to "good" schools within the district; HUntington is famous for constantly re-drawing its within-district bounds. So my advice, as a HUntington native who went to 3 different elementary schools without ever moving - don't buy a house based on what schools it is currently zoned for. Buy a house because you like it and its location.
