In an effort to save the "Are LI teachers overpaid" thread from being locked because the discussion goes off topic to the police, I'd like to start a thread to ask the question:

Are the SCPD and NCPD overpaid?

My thoughts:

Yes. From what I've read (newsday and city-data), the average salary is $145k per year for the scpd and ncpd. Also, another poster said they do not pay a penny to their pension and their medical insurance. I'm not sure if this is true, but if it is, then the answer is a resounding YES, they are overpaid.

They are incredibly overpaid compared to any other police force in this country. They should all be forced to a minimum 10% reduction in their salary at the next contract.

Time to reign in these exhorbitant salaries.

and let's not even get into a discussion of the little work they do compared to NYPD.

They are nothing more than revenue producing ticket writers.

Now we're getting into the hyperbole again.

SCPD and NCPD are first responders..if there is a fire or you have a heart attack or your hamster gets lost they usually show up first. Describing that as "nothing more than revenue producing ticket writers" is dumb.

Starting salary for an SCPD officer fresh out of the academy is $97,958/year as of 2007 according to the SCPD website.
Suffolk County Police Dept (http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police/recruitment.htm - broken link)

Starting salary for an SCSO deputy sheriff fresh out of the academy is $75,194/year as of 2008.
http://truthinsuffolk.org/broreports/broscpdhp.pdf

Both have full police officer status. Both perform police functions (deputy sheriffs performed police duties even before the highway patrol takeover, in fact they have been performing police functions since 1683 - long before the SCPD was created in 1960). Both receive the same training (deputy sheriffs receive additional training related to their judicial and civil duties) in the same building and from the same exact people.

$98,000 vs $75,000 - I think I know which civil service title needs to go into the wastebasket.

well they're either overpaid or the NYPD is underpaid....at least based on all the city cops desperate to get into the Nassau/Suffolk academies.

I'll go with the former. The city cops are able to make do with what they got, why can't the ncpd and scpd?

no, you're wrong! City cops have to line up at soup kitchens every day just to get a warm meal. Then they go home to their coardboard boxes under the Gowanus. It's a disgrace I tell you!
