Hampton Bays is a better district but you have to deal with constant summer traffic from the drunken kids. It is a middle class town with some okay businesses.
Aquebogue is a fairly desolate town but I agree that Riverhead is a lesser district. The advantage is that you are close to better shopping which is on 25 and 58, and the outlets. The north fork also is much better traffic-wise excluding when the Strawberry Festival comes around and around Halloween.

As far as the worst Hampton goes, that is EASILY Northampton, most commonly known as Flanders!

OK not all of Northampton is bad, the neighborhood EAST of Wildwood Lake seems OK, it's the WEST side that's sketchy, by the Bowling Alley, always lots of creeps loitering around there.
Westhampton seems OK. Hampton Bays has issues in spots, but I really haven't seen any loitering problems in the main part of town. Perhaps the situation is worse further down 27A past McDonalds and by the tracks, think there's lots of flophouses there. The neighborhoods on the east side of the canal are very quaint, piney, and un-hampton like. There's also that Red Creek Rd/Squire's Path area. Pretty much as close to S.Jersey as you're gonna get with those majestic old Pines and decent size lots. Flanders & Riverside are the worst 'hoods in that area for sure.
I like Hampton Bays & Westhampton as they are usually not as hard hit with the Cidiots in summer as towns farther east, and you can enjoy a mellow summer day there without too many annoying people (as I did for a few times this summer).

Always considered Northampton the area around Wildwood Lake, Flanders is further east past Riverside and west of Hampton Bays.
Northampton used to be known as the Village of Pine Valley I believe. Some maps still show the Pine Valley designation. As for how it got its name, if you've been there, its nothing but Pitch Pine trees!

When you hit the area near the gas station; both sides of the highway/road have sketchy areas that are areas that you probably wouldn't want to walk through after dark. specifically these areas are worse than the worst parts of Hampton Bays. That's why I specifically made that comment.
*** If you come to the intersection where you head south (I think 105), you come up to the northampton sign shortly after leaving the riverhead/aquebogue area.
