thanks guys! How to turn on and off the system? Do you need to add water into the boiler manually? Since there is always water in pipes, do you need to empty pipes when you shut it off after winter? If not, you keep using the same water year round? That doesn't make any sense.

You do not manually add water. The water is supplied by the main coming into the house. the system is "turned on and off" by thermostats, usually located in the center of a heat zone.

The same water is not used constantly. The boiler heats water for heat, as well as the hot water for your sinks and shower. So the water is constantly, or almost, being replaced.

I'm confused. I was told in the house there is gas for water and sinks besides hotwater baseboard only for heat. If the house has two separate system, same water in pipes (for heat, not for water/sinks) keeps running all around the house during the whole winter since it is a CLOSED system. ???

Emilyclouds....the previous statement is more than likely incorrect. You porbably have a gas fired hot water heater for your sink and shower hot water. Its completely different from your boiler. The best system to have when you have a boiler system is a indirect hot water storage tank. This is where you use your boiler to make hot water then send that water thru a coil in the storage tank for hot water.

How to turn on and off the system?do you need to empty pipes when you shut it off after winter? Would the hot water in the tank be used up if you don't refill it?

^^ You turn the system off by setting the thermostat off. You do not empty the pipes after the heating season. The hot water tank & boiler is refilled by an automatic water feeder. Just think this system is just like any other heating system. Turn the thermostat to your desired temperature & have it cleaned before the start of the next heating season.
