Does anyone have experience with geo thermal heating in their home? I'm doing a reno in East Hampton and would like to convert from oil to either gas or geo thermal. Any comments, welcome.

It sounds awesome in theory. We found that the reality is that there aren't a whole lot of people on LI who install and service these types of systems. That makes them expensive and hard to fix when there's a problem. Drilling effective wells also seems to be a bit of an artform, so that is another snag.

My father had an estimate done for installing a geo thermal unit for heat and AC. The estimate was very high, and although he would have recouped his money in the long run (at least in theory) it was a lot of money.

I don't understand why this type of heating/cooling isn't more popular, so I'm hoping that it takes off some day so that more contractors on LI get into it.

If you contact local companies that do solar, alot do geo-thermal.The difference between switching from gas to oil or oil to gas is not significant in monthly prices, but going geothermal will save you alot monthly and there are grants and incentives that you are eligible for that you can recoup when doing taxes. My suggestion contact some solar guys or even LIPA or national grid (they know).
