I've lived in Patchogue Village since 2000. It has its charms and its rough spots, but I've never felt unsafe (of course, I don't hang out in the area near the Railroad Station after dark--I just wouldn't do that).
Also, my child goes to Stony Brook Child Care. I LOVE that place. I toured Kiddie Academy, both Montessoris, and some place on 25A in Setauket (the name of which I don't remember), but none made me feel as comfortable as SB Child Care. For me, the only downside of the place (besides the expense) is that most of the families I've met there live on the North Shore, so birthday parties and playdates are inconvenient.
We only have a few more months there before my daughter starts school, which has me anxious--not just because the Patchogue-Medford school district is in financial trouble and has declining Reading scores, but because it is a long schlep down Nicoll's Road, and I hate to think she'll be so far away from me.
Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
You should check out Patchogue now in 2018. Main St is beautiful and home values have gone up. We live across the street from the water and are walking distance to LIRR, Ferries to Fire Island, the Great South Bay and Main St. There are many beautiful old colonials. And now "Illegals" are popular. They are finally accepted and people love them. Even by the train station it is nicer. We were hoping to sell our house for something bigger and we can't even afford it now.
Patchogue turned into the most happening neighborhood on Long Island for nightlife.
