Actually most of the shoppers there were kind of upscale. The Greenport one feels more like you said, but when I was up there the restroom was fairly clean and I wound up getting a good deal on cranberry juice and a snack, because their prices are lower. Everything on the South Fork costs more than the north fork. Even out in Montauk, I guess Montauk isn't the blue collar area it once was.
IGA isn't actually a "chain" but just a banner. Each store can set it's own prices and policies.

IGA stands for Independent Grocers Association, so guess what that means? Each store is owned by different owners.

There are still two IGA's not far from me in Bellport Village, and only one looks lousy (Wallens, due to never expanding or really improving much over the years). The other one (Cirillo's) is very clean. They're both really expensive, and I would never shop at either one over a place like Stop & Shop or even Pathmark.

the south fork is definetly more glitz and glamour and upscale, while the north fork is mostly farms and vineyards, and quiet getaways. pretty much the opposite of the rest of LI. i used to work out of riverhead and covered the whole north fork and the south fork out to about hampton bays

when i was younger my mother would always shop at the IGA in brentwood. she swore it was cheaper than pathmark. and as i remember it, it was cleaner and definitely calmer and quieter. this is going back 15+ years tho
