Hello all. New to the boards.

My wife and I are looking to buy an old house (1949) which has a recently updated forced hot air system installed. We are trying to estimate our budgets and see if we can afford this house. I would like to know if anyone has or at least knows how much the bill would be for Forced Hot Air a month?

My wife is always cold, so the heat would be around 72ish (maybe less if it breaks our wallet).

There is only 1 heating zone for all 3 floors (basement, main floor, second floor), not 100% sure about the house size. Just looking for a general idea of what the monthly costs would be.

Thanks so much!!!

Whats the square footage? How are the windows-old? Whats heating your hot water? We talking natural gas or propane?
As you see there are alot of different variables. You cant compare 2 homes b/c they could be totally opposite. Without knowing these crucial aspects its just a wild guess. Can you give a guess on any of the above questions?

* I can't get the square footage just yet..I'm trying though.
* Basement windows are old, will be replaced, 1st/2nd floor windows are not terribly old, but not brand new
* Natural Gas, Pipe coming into the basement
* Gas is heating the hot water (is that the right answer?)

^^ Ok. Get the approximate square footage and I can give you a monthly consumption estimate.

I think it's 754 (on main floor)...is that right?
Basement is the same size upstairs is slightly smaller.

Edit: Total Living Area 1320
Edit2: My wife says about 1600.

1600 doesnt sound right if there are 3 finished floors. Is this a cottage?

Anyways,,,I would figure the bill being $300 a month, on budget, year round. You should be safe. Im a little high for high prices.

Good Luck!~

K, well I'm a first time home owner, so I apologize if some of my numbers are off. This is not a cottage, it's a full blow dormer cape.

How exactly do you find the square footage out?

Ask the previous owner for a copy of this past year heating bill. Then there is no guessing.

That's a good idea, except

(1) the owner is crazy
(2) we're trying to decide this BEFORE going ahead with the purchase

Thanks for all your help though, I guess we'll assume 300 for gas/heating per month year round

When the time comes you might want to switch over to 2 zone.
I have forced hot air, its sucks.
$300.00 sounds about right, just dont move the thermostate around a lot.
