I always assumed that when you put your stuff into storage it's insured. Apparently, it's not. Any thoughts on trusting all of your furnishings in one of these places for several months? Should I take out some kind of additional insurance independently?

This is the second time I have had things in storage. They did not even offer it so I will be making a trip back there to see. It does get costly but what is the worth of your items. ( not requiring an answer) It depends.
Just a few weeks ago someone told me his parents had things in storage and 8 units burned down. One of them his parents. Everything lost and there were many irreplaceable heirlooms lost.
A week later another storage place had units burn down.
It may be worth it for you.

I'm currently renting a space in a storage facility. For an extra $8 per month, I have 2K worth of insurance. They said it's "mandatory" to have the insurance. Before renting here, I was at another storage facility that didn't require insurance. I had my stuff there for a very long time ( a few years) and never had a problem.

I don't like the idea of paying $125/mo to store items, but these are things that I want to keep and I have absolutely no room in my apartment to keep them. I'm going to have to keep my items in storage until I can buy a place to live permanently.

We have homeowner's through USAA, and per them, everything in our storage unit is 100% covered through that policy. If you already have a policy in effect, call your insurer and see if the same is the case for you.

Thank-you, last time it was not.

I would be careful in assuming that your homeowners insurance would cover items stored in a storage facility. You should absolutely read your policy and call your insurance company to make sure. See if the property you're renting from offers insurance.... like I said, I pay an extra $8/mo for 2K in insurance.

Thank-you as well. I would not assume anything and would need to see something in writing if my insurance person says I am covered.
Regardless, for a few dollars a month more it is worth knowing your things are covered.
