I'm buying a house in Shirley and was wondering if anyone knew offhand if there is a limit as to how many sheds I can have on the property without needing a permit.

I already understand that the shed size must be 144 sq. ft. or under.

I'm not looking to fill up the property with sheds. I just want to keep yard equipment separate from the stuff I don't want to smell like oil/gas.

The only thing that worries me is the fact they use singular as opposed to “sheds”. This is a case where I’d call the town.

Just use as many sheds as you need. When it's time to sell, sheds are a gift. If it's an issue, Craigslist, free shed...will be gone same day.

I agree that you should call the town (631)451-TOWN
You also need to be aware of the setbacks.

The link I sent mentioned the setbacks so that should help.

Thanks for the replies, I did call the town and was told I needed a permit for ANY shed no matter the size.

I've also read the documents and town code, which specifically says no permit needed for a shed 144 sq. ft. or under.

When I build I'll make sure to stay within the proper setbacks. The last thing I want to worry about is having to unpack and move an entire shed because it's too close to the property line.

Goodluck with those setbacks. 12 ft from the property line. I dont think i have EVER seen a shed that far away from the property line.

The setback is not 12 feet, it's 3 feet:

How far does my shed need to be from the property line?

If your shed is in the rear yard and does not require a permit, it needs to be at least three feet from the property line. If it is in the side yard, it must conform to zoning setbacks (see yard diagram on back).

The only mention of 12 feet that I see in that linked PDF is the maximum height. Sheds cannot be more than 12 feet tall.

Sorry, 12 feet on a side yard. That's what I was told when I put my ig pool in

It’s amazing how lame these town workers are.
