I see it as a guide to where the parents demand the most from their kids and the kids are therefore the most motivated to do well (I figure the teachers, texts, desks, pencils, and IQ's are all essentially similar across many LI districts...parents and student motivation are the decisive and varying factors in student achievement).

It could be that Asian parents tend to be more demanding.

(Note, to these and to all generalities in life there must be exceptions)

Tough to really extrapolate anything from this list because average SAT numbers are so easily skewed by a small number of low-performing students. Not saying that his is the case, but (for example) if a town has a small group of ESL students that score very low, then the whole average is dragged down. That's why I don't like average SAT scores to evaluate school and student performance.

I think it is understood that as an average the lower scorers will effect things one way and the higher scorer's another.

I don't know if it is any more or less enlightening as a data point about a district given that it is an elective exam (SAT) and may not even be taken by someone not thinking of college.

Certain Regents exams (essentially required for graduation), on the other hand, might skew things even more than an SAT ranking.

Just an imperfect data point as are all rankings and district-wide test results.

One wouldn't say, "I live in a continent". "Trees grow in islands." "Man landed in the moon." etc.

[Edit: it's a boring thread...divergence is to be expected]
Not to be a semantics nerd, but if I live in New York State, why can't I live in Long Island also?
I don't live on New York State or live on the USA.

^ because the keyword is island. It is considered a surface like the moon. You don't live in surfaces, but on them. It's more about how it sounds.

Ok, but I will continue to say I live in LI just annoy the natives here with their annoying Lawnguy accents and bad gramma.

Agree. Medians are much more useful.

Nonetheless, this list seems to be more or less in an unsurprising order.

When you can sell a shack in Jericho for 500k, there's a reason for it. Good schools are the be all and end all of property values on LI. Every homeowner as a vested interest in their district showing up high on all of these ranking sheets, not that I necessarily agree with the practice, since most of the metrics used are horrible (US World and News Reports in particular).

Meh. Even before ranking mania took hold, we all knew which districts were desirable.
