Hello, I recently received a job offer in College Point and we are going to be relocating from the Albany area. I have lived in suburbs around Albany and Schenectady pretty much my whole life. My wife has some family in Glen Cove, but it seems pricey in a lot of areas on the North Shore.

I need an area that is good for families, my wife and I have 5 children. We have a full house obviously, so need at least 2000 Square Feet. A backyard would be nice, a third of an acre is fine. Budget is $2500 per month. I am looking at some houses in Islip Terrace and West Babylon that seem reasonable.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

FYI, West Babylon is covered by two different School Districts: #2 = West Babylon, #3 = North Babylon, just in case that matters to you.

Funny, I'm thinking of moving upstate from LI.
Or anywhere away from LI.

Is there much of a difference between the two?

Islip to College Point=long commute especially going with rush hour traffic. Not impossible, but not going to be pleasant. Would you consider living closer to Queens and sacrificing some space? If you are going to live that far out east, consider at least staying on the north shore or center island.

Commuting to College Point would be rough from Suffolk County.

In your case, I would recommend Nassau County. Hicksville, Valley Stream and Franklin Square have a lot of reasonably priced inventory.

Some neighborhoods of West Babylon also get Babylon Village school district.

And a verrrry tiny portion of it gets Wyandanch school district, which I don't recommend (about 5 blocks).

However, i'm not sure if any of it gets Lindenhurst SD. I think Venetian Shores is technically in West Babylon but gets Lindenhurst SD (don't quote me on that).

N.Babylon SD is somewhat more culturally diverse than W.Babylon SD.

Economically, they're about the same with about 20% of students on free or reduced lunch...which is actually lower than the state average which is good.

Seclusion. And affordability. LI is a complete and total ripoff and it is only gonna get worse.
I have narrowed down the areas I want to move upstate. Gonna start heading up on weekends to scope it all out before I make a decision. I'm not gonna miss the beaches, bagels, pizza, or cologne.

Would it be possible to get some land out in Suffolk and take the LIRR?

I see saw some nice houses in Centerreach--- is their WIFI on the train?

It seems the train doesn't go to College Point--- I guess I could cab it after???
