Why is everybody in a such a rush that they have to drive so fast?
Leave yourself plenty of time and you'll get where you have to go on time.
With all due respect, applying that logic on a broader scale can lead one to ask why anyone would drive at all. As I've illustrated to my family on many occasions, driving 10 MPH over the speed limit on a trip from Long Island to Boston can shave at least a half hour off the drive, that's something to consider.
And there's an important distinction to be made between driving 70 MPH on the L.I.E. and driving 60 MPH on a secondary road such as Jericho Turnpike.

Well we drive because we have to get to work. I leave my self plenty of time because I want to have as little stress as possible while driving. I don't want to feel that I need to race and beat all the lights etc.
Let the idiots do 80 mph on the LIE, you are just going to catch up with them at the first delay.
55 makes zero sense on a straight highway like the LIE, especially when the speed limit is 50 (and even some places 55) on roads like Vets Highway and similar local roads that have multiple places for people to pull out into oncoming traffic.
People are not doing 65+ because they 'like to speed', it's because it's the whole friggin' point of a 4 lane highway to move at a faster rate than side roads.
55 is not a magic number that saves lives. I guess all the other roads in the US that are 65 or even 70 zones must be littered with bodies. Oh wait, no they're not...
The difference between driving the LIE from the Midtown Tunnel to Riverhead at 55 mph or 75 mph will save you a whole whopping 15 minutes.
But then again...Long Islanders are busy people and that extra 15 minutes will make a whole lot of difference in their otherwise humdrum lives.
I always love that comparison. Why stop there though? Why not make the speed limit 45? It'll only add 10 more minutes. We'll all be safer, right?
