Hello,

This will be our first full Summer in Mineola.

What type of Summer "passes" should we get to go to the beach/pool? Mineola swimming pool? Town of North Hempstead whatever type of parking pass for the Port Washington beaches? New York State parks for Jones (if that's what's needed)?

Any recommendation if there is one super-pass that get them all or if you need different passes?

Is there a Long Island resident concept? Or there is just a town or even village resident concept? (Hamlet resident? ;-) )

I know, the first thing people will say is, what for? Well, we'd like to go to a couple of beaches (one North one South, not always to the same one, and to at least one swimming pool during the Summer... That's why we are asking for recommendations of what people like most or gets more for the buck...

We come from a place where ALL the beaches are public to everybody... so this is all pretty confusing...

Thanks!

Regards,
Hipo

Hi Hipo and welcome to our beautiful island! There is no such thing as a free beach here.

It is best to go to the beach that is in your jurisdiction. I forget if Mineola is TOH or TONH but it's best to go to the pools and beach in your jurisdiction bc that will be the cheapest option. I believe Jones is $8 for everyone bc its a state park but a beach like Pt Lookout would be less for TOH residents than non-residents. Bring an ID or bill with you so you dont get charged the non-resident fee.

I much prefer south shore beaches. North shore beaches are very rocky.

As a TNH resident you are able to use the Bar Beach/Hempstead harbor beach in Port Washington which is the closest to you. If you prefer a sandy beach then you can go to the only "County residency" requirement beach of Nickerson Beach between Pt. Lookout, which you are not able to use and Long Beach. It requires a leisure pass and last I knew $8 per day. It is a well kept park with a play area for kids and bathrooms, plenty of parking and the only drawback is that it is a long walk to the ocean on the sand.

Christopher Morley has a pool as does Tully Park, Manorhaven all admission via drivers license and parking fee as you need to prove residency in the town of NH. Of course, Mineola has a village pool, as you know.

I think mineola is part of two towns, neither of which covers both shores. Season passes are the way to go. I prefer the south shore ocean beaches over the north shore Sound beaches but that is just me. Enjoy, the beach is a great way to spend the day.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the tips.

We actually went to Nickerson Beach last weekend to give it a try and it was very nice. We'll definitively repeat!

Hipo

Empire State passport is $65 and good until 3/31/2014. If you plan on going to Jones Beach a lot, or visiting other state parks, it is worth buying.
