I currently work in Manhattan and live in Central NJ. I am in my mid 20s and have planned for over a year to relocate to the Hoboken/Jersey City area. Unfortunately my job is being transferred from Manhattan to Mineola in the Fall. I do not want to live in Long Island. I have heavily considered moving to Queens (Astoria, Woodside) but ultimately I would really like to live in NJ. Anyone who is familiar with the northern NJ area and Mineola area, what would the commute be like driving from Hoboken, Union City, Jersey City, Secuacus, etc. to Mineola in the mornings and evenings? Also, I have been told that the train station is walking distance to the new office. Is it practical to take the subway up to Jamaica and pick up the LIRR to Mineola? I am not familiar at all with Long Island or with driving around the area since I always take public transportation to the city from Central NJ. Anyone who can answer these questions or make some suggestions for me would be a big help.

Thank you!

Penn to Mineola is 35 minutes (15 from Jamaica), if you can catch an express train. The problem is that with reverse commuting, you'll have less of a selection of trains. I personally wouldn't recommend the commute from NJ.

Forget Jamaica. Live in Hoboken or Jersey City and take the PATH to Penn. From Penn, take the LIRR. That's doable.

I think if you plan on driving from NJ to Mineola during rush hour you need to plan at least two hours for the commute, probably more. You are talking about going over two bridges and/or tunnels and then using the belt or LIE. Like others said, your best bet is a train to penn station and then a train to mineola. If you decide on astoria, then you should be able to take a subway or lirr to jamaica and then transfer to a train to mineola.

Take the train. Mineola is a hub, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a train. Mineola is very walkable.

Reverse peak trains are hard to come by in the AM hours. The main line is set up for one way operation for the most part in the morning.

I see no way you can do this in less than an hour and a half each way, and that's if everything goes smoothly with the reverse commute.

I think you would have to give yourself an hour and a half.

For example in the morning you could take the Path from Hoboken at 7:10 and got to Penn at 7:25, there is a 7:39 train to Mineola that gets in around 8:15.

Just curious why you wouldn't want to live around the mineola area for a few years....until maybe another job pops up or something. 3 hours commuting (round trip) daily takes a huuuuge toll on the mind & body.

Thank you all for your answers.

I know the three hour commute (round trip) really sucks because I currently do that from Monmouth County to NYC everyday. I don't want to live in Mineola mainly for personal reasons. Just the fact that I really don't know anyone there and I like being around the city. Also it would be more difficult to get back to NJ as that is where I've lived my whole life. The reason I was thinking Astoria was because then maybe I could drive but I'm not sure how it will be with parking. The issue I have with the PATH to the LIRR is the cost, it'll be over $300/month. But I guess I have alot of thinking to do and will have to make a sacrifice somewhere
