I am currently a cablevison tv and optonline customer with the family cable package. My deal ends next month and I am thinking of downgrading service. I was playing with connecting the cable directly to the back of a tv that has a qam tuner and to my surprise, not only did I receive cbs, abc, nbc but I also received usa, tnt, tbs, yes and other channels which I thought would be encrypted.

Does anyone know if I cut my tv service back to basic cable only or completely shut it down will all of the qam channels that I get now remain or would I lose them?

if you reduce your service, the only channels you will miss are the ones on your cablebox. they will not allow you tv service without a box. if you hand in your boxes, they will cut your line at the tap within 30 days. they can control the channels on your cable box, not via your qam tuner. btw, where did you pick up your qam tuner? i would like one!

btw, they no longer offer "Family" service. they changed their packages around. for instance, basic is now called "economy".

I figured that, however, what kind of TV do you have?

Someone should post a list of every station that you can get with a QAM tuner and what channel number it is. I don't think that is listed anywhere. I haven't used the QAM tuner in a while, since I currently have the free cable boxes. But when I have to turn them in, I plan to go back to using the QAM tuner. The last time I used it (over a year ago), I definitely did not get USA, TBS, or YES. It only got the basic broadcast stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS, etc) and the shopping stations (HSN, QVC, etc), and a lot of "garbage".

Which is basically Family cable at a higher price.

If your TV can tune to digital stations such as 2-1 (or 2.1), you have a QAM tuner.

Thank you for explaining that. I wondered why my TV (which didn't have a box) did that. I was considering downgrading my service and eliminating one of the boxes. Now that I know I will still have some options on the basement TV, I will mist likely move forward with my plan.
