Hi everyone,

Looking for info on Oceanside and surrounding environs, such as Lynbrook, etc: neighborhoods, schools, etc. What has been your experience living in these towns? We have kiddos with special needs and also others who are gifted, so special ed and ed in general is important, along with safety and an overall nice environment.

Our house in Suffolk is currently on the market, as we need to move West to be closer to family and closer to the city, as almost all of our kids' specialists are there. So..we are really trying to do our research and narrow down our target areas. Also looking in Merrick, North Wantagh / Levittown, Massapequa and Plainview. I have reviewed the census data on all the above, but would love to hear about your first -hand experiences.

Thanks!

Levittown is pretty famous as a good special ed SD and has a lot of academic extra curriculars...
Overall however absolutely none of the communities mentioned could be called "unsafe".

I grew up in Oceanside and went to OHS as did my sister. The area is fine, schools are very good and its very convenient to Manhattan. Parts of Oceanside are very Jewish oriented while other parts are more italian/irish/etc.

We live in the North Merrick school district. I have one child that requires special ed services and one that is in the gifted program. I am very happy with the district. The resource room teacher is fabulous, and has brought him almost to grade level. The gifted program is very good. They provide such a great experience, my daughter was bored in school previously and now she is engaged and excited to go.

There aren't any bad sections. I would be most concerned with a thorough home inspection because alot of the area was swamp land and most of the houses are developments.

All areas are good, but some areas and elementary schools are deemed more desirable than others and this is reflected in sale price. The Oceanlea type of layout is rather different and some people like it, others hate it. Parts of Rockville Centre are zoned for Oceanside schools. Since it's so close to the water, many homes do not have basements. The harbor area has a lot of hi ranches.

Grew up in Lynbrook - really nice place to raise a family, not snobby, it is a safe, typical "small town" feel. Good schools, too. Oceanside is really nice, too. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but O'side is pretty large and a little more spread out. Also, I don't know if this matters to you (it did to me) - many parts of O'side don't have basements, and are located in flood areas - not as much of that issue in Lynbrook.

Thanks for all the info! Do you happen to know anything about Lynbrook's special ed program? I read on here a while back that Oceanside has self contained and inclusion. Do you know if Lynbrook also has this?

I grew up in Oceanside. It is a generally safe area with lots of strip mall shopping. I think Lynbrook has more "character" because it has more of a walkable Village feel rather than a drive down a congested road to go from mini mall to mini mall feel. But I could be biased -- I think people are inclined to either love or loathe the place where they grew up.

OHS was a good high school when I was there, but family members who work in the school district claim that its on the decline. I don't know whether that's actually true or whether they've just become jaded.

Also, in Oceanside you have to be concerned with flood insurance. This can be expensive depending on which part of Oceanside you choose.

One last thing is that Oceanside can be kind of inconvenient to get to and to leave. It is at least 10 min from the Southern State and the Meadowbrook. If you drive as part of your commute, this could make things difficult.
