I love Holbrook. I commuted to Roslyn from here and Great Neck is not that bad. I could make it to Roslyn in 40 minutes but I was flexible and did not have to be to work until 10am. I would leave at 9:15 and get coffee and still make it by 10am. I also would leave at 3:15 and make it back by 4:00. Not your common workday I know. I have even left at 4 and it was an hour. After that it gets a little nuts. When in doubt take the service road.

Dh commutes all over to the city brooklyn etc he is an electrician. The main reason we don't think of moving is how easy the access is. We have main arteries all over 454, sunrise, LIE, Nicholls rd that don't impede on our developement at all. Also how close we are to Blue Point beaches literally 13 -15 minutes and you are on the beach. Having the train in Ronkonkoma right down Union Ave is awesome too. We are also close to the airport which is great for vacations. If you decide on our developement "parkland" we are Islip township and get a town sticker for resident parking there for $45 for 2 years. It makes travelling WONDERFUL. It is all the little things about Holbrook that makes you love it.

We are both in our 30s with a 7 year old and another on the way. We love it here! Good luck.

Sachem has many towns that incorporate it's school district. So when you say you are moving to Holbrook, you have to check out Holtsville, Farmingville, Lake Ronkonkoma and part of Lake Grove because those towns are divided into the the two high schools. Yes East is brand new and looks better there are both affluent and mainstream sections that attend there. Farmingville also has a rough area and that is spilling into the school. North has Lake Ronkonkoma area and that also affects it though I do know that North performs better on standardized testings is better rated by US News top high schools and has more children attending colleges. These numbers change year by year and overall they are neck and neck. Overall it is a great family neighborhood and for an area full of children there is not much vandalism and is pretty quiet. Crime stats are also very low.

Default Holbrook was my Hometown

Hi I lived in Holbrook for 25 years before my husband was transferred to Texas and now I live in Florida, and all my memories of Holbrook for myself and my children are great ones. The schools were great, and the neighborhood we lived in was filled with wonderful people. Always felt safe there. I couldn't take the cold anymore, but still miss the old neighborhood.
I will always be a Long Island Girl

Hey carolynb did you like Texas or Florida and which one do you prefer? Sometimes we think of moving and I am wondering how it's like moving from long island and how it compares. Thanks.

IMHO east is the better school and alot of people agree people who go to north wish they could be at east. Maybe just because it is new I dont know . and alot has to do with certain graduating years some are worse then others. we all no sayville and bayport has bad heroin problems amongst the youth but no one will ever admit to that from those towns except I know kids there and they admit to it my oldest knew it also but those schools are always thought to be great. Now I ask you were you scared to go to either school? you must have graduated within the past three years and your first year in north must have been with all the kids from east and north then the school split and you went to east now you are getting older that is when the drugs and fights start . I could be wrong maybe you moved and went to both I dont know I am just going by my expieriences with both and when my oldest went the rougher area goes to north. And my middle son goes to east rite now and I have yet to hear anything bad yet. peace
I'm not 100% on the subject but I used to do business with the Sachem school district about 12 years ago. During that time there were two high schools. In my mind I remember them as Sachem North and Sachem South. Both were high schools. My business was with Sachem north. From my memory it was a great looking school. They had a lot of the technology before other schools. Sachem North had 2 huge computer labs for example.

Otherwise, Ive always liked Holbrook. The area is nice and the new homes are great. I also like land and they have plenty of it. Take a look at the geography of LI and the homes. The biggest values are on the homes with the biggest properties. One day Holbrook will be worth a fortune due to the big properties. The question is how long will that take and will it be cut it up into many properties like Nassau before that happens.

Now they have 2 actual high schools that serve grades 9-12 I believe, East and North, and 4 middle schools that serve 6-8, I believe. Sachem "South" is now Samoset Middle School, they built Sequoia Middle School over by IRS, and they still have Sagamore and Seneca Middle Schools. The district is still huge, but at least they aren't cramming as many kids into the building as they used to. .
