Nobody said it was blasphemy, it can just be an unstable way to raise a family. When people say "is 100K a large salary on LI", they're not referring to 25 year olds living in basement apartments, they're talking about families.

Also why does everyone on this site think apartment = basement. You do know there are above ground apartments right?
Seriously, Every few days someone has to make a thread asking if astronomical amounts of money is enough to survive on LI. Meanwhile half the people that live here survive on 1/3 of it.

The problem on LI is that those "half the people" have to pay astronomical and forever rising taxes so certain public sector union civil "servants" can earn six figures (a single salary, NOT total family income), are guaranteed two raises a year regardless of quality of performance, pay little or nothing for benefits, and contribute little or nothing for a pension.

100k is astronomical?
I can assure you that if you intend to buy a home and raise a family when you grow up, 100k is not a large salary at all. Most of the people here remind folks of this because that is the typical reason people move out to the suburbs (i.e. LI).
If you want to rent a small studio, share an apartment, etc - of course you can survive on much less. But how long will you do that and be happy? 25? 30? 35? 40?
Yes. I do rent. However, the monthly rent I am charged is akin to a mortgage payment. I truly think people spend their money on stupid things. Do you need a 40 thousand dollar car? We have two completely paid off cars that were purchased used - recent models that get good gas mileage - one is a hybrid. Do you need to go out to dinner three nights a week? We have a designated "date night" and we eat within a budget. Do you need to go clothes shopping? Do you need to get your hair done? Do you need to get manicures and pedicures and buy furnishings for your home every day? No, no, no, no! Well, there! I've just saved you a few hundred dollars a week. I have a year's worth of my salary in a savings account and it's steadily climbing. We don't live beyond our means, but like I said, we live comfortably with money leftover. Why is that so surprising? It's because everyone else feels the need to outdo everyone else and have the bigger and best everything, and we just don't give two poops if we're cool or not... we are happy and we have savings!
