I have heard 4 weeks. A lot depends upon how much you want her to stay.
If you really like her - and since she is taking care of such a young child, she must be worth a lot to you.
So pay her accordingly!
I would agree with Sheen. This is someone you want to build a strong relationship with, since she is taking on a responsibility that has great meaning to you. She's watching your child and I would want to give her incentive to do her very best. I would not treat her like the person that parks your car or the super of your building.
4 weeks pay and a small gift would be appropriate. No "pro-rating" on the bonus! This is a person who is caring for your most precious gift and you should treat her accordingly.
It sounds like 4 weeks is more common than I suspected. My wife and I were planning on 2 weeks pro-rated for the partial year.
My concern about not pro-rating the bonus is that it would set the expectation for a higher bonus next year after she will have been with us for the full year.
I agree that this is a special relationship, as much family as employee, and we want to pay her well. My wife and I are a young working couple fortunate enough to be able to afford the luxury of a nanny but our budget is only so big.
Is anyone else willing to share their experience?
