What kind of traffic should we expect driving from L.A.(Manhattan Beach area) to Las Vegas, in early August, on a Thursday or a Friday? What would be a possible range of time for the trip assuming minimal stops for gas?

Make it Thursday. On Friday it is usually, quite literally, bumper to bumper for 270 miles coming in, and on Sunday it's the same going back. If you can, try to come in on a weekday and go home on a weekday.

Friday afternoon through evening on I-15 to Las Vegas is typically bad, though it's not as bad now as when the economy was healthier. Try to travel on Thursday, or early on Friday. Google maps says 4.5 to 6.5 hours, that's probably about right, unless you travel when traffic is very light and go 85+ on I-15, then 4 hours might be doable.

Oh. Most cars can make it on a tank of gas, but it's always a good idea to fill up in Victorville or Barstow just in case of problems. I have done it in 4 hours with no heavy traffic, and I've done it in 13 hours due to wrecks on I-15. You might be looking at six hours on Fri. coming here, and on Sun. going back.

Some people take I-40 from Barstow and cut over through Kelso, or even go as far as U.S. 95 and up through Laughlin in order to get around the I-15 parking lot.

Leave by noon at the latest. Your biggest traffic issue will be everything prior to Glen Helen.

Manhattan Beach to here is about 10-15 miles farther than my usual trip to Newport Beach. Without traffic it's 3 hrs 45 min. Just leave early if you have to leave on a Friday.

I work at the state line and I can say for sure don't even think of going home on Sunday afternoon. The freeway is a parking lot!

Home in Las Vegas or home in LA? Isn't most of the traffic in the southbound lanes, or is it both directions now? When I go to LA I try to go and come back on a weekday.

I love driving "opposite flow" (to California on Friday, back to LAS on Sunday) and looking at all those poor souls headed the other direction while I fly along at 95mph. The backup on Sundays to head south through the idiotic Produce Inspection Station at Yermo seems to be 10+ miles in most cases (even though one can exit the freeway coming down off the pass and bypass the whole ordeal on the 2-lane that parallels the UP tracks toward Yermo).

Friday evening traffic also seems to be beyond unbelievable headed north at the I-15/215 interchange at the bottom of Cajon Pass.

Such are the little unrecognized pleasures of being a Vegas (and not a Socal) local!
