I've lived in both and love them both. The weather isn't as bad as most would say. In fact when I spent 51 days of leave there in 2005 it only rained once....and it was just a sprinkle. And you don't have to live in Portland or even in the metropolitan area, there's other great towns and cities like McMinnville or Hillsboro that can offer the same type of atmosphere for less. Or go even smaller like Dayton or Yamhill. I'd move back in a heart beat if they had an active duty military base there, but alas they don't, but lucky for me Vegas does

Come on down and visit us sometime and have some fun on the Las Vegas Strip!
This person is not looking for feedback; this is thinly-disguised spam for their co-op. They signed up last night and then immediately spammed three different forums on C-D with basically the same message about their co-op (with the url, of course).

Just as an fyi, it's also pretty common in D.C., although I don't know why.

As a retiree recently relocated to Las Vegas myself (but not yet in my final home -- still thinking about it), I suggest coming here & renting a home for a year. During the year, you'll get a chance to explore and decide which section of town might be best for your tastes.

I also suggest contacting a reputable real estate agent to assist you in finding a home to rent, and also work with a real estate agent to find a final destination assuming you do indeed decide to relocate here. I am not a real estate agent - so I don't have a particular bias on this - but I do believe they help. The custom here is that the landlord provides compensation to the real estate agent who assists you in finding a rental (so no money directly out of your pocket), and the custom here also is that the seller of a home/condo/apartment pays commission to the real estate agent who assists the buyer as well. (There are exceptions to the rule, of course, so check ahead of time)

You can get many opinions from people on the board, and you can do a lot of basic research with just the Internet, but IMHO a good agent will accelerate your search.

I haven't lived in Las Vegas, but I've lived in a lot of places besides Portland...all of them SUNNY! I don't find the winters to be hard here...until about April ;-). At the end of March, however, we schedule a trip to brighter climes to get our spirits up and ready for the GORGEOUS summers that are Portland. Portland summers have been described as "Nirvana" by a friend of mine. There are so many fun things to do in Portland, you won't ever get bored! We even have Cirque De Soleil in town right now (just trying to give LV a run for its money).

If you're thinking of moving in 2 years you should HIGHLY consider The Sheldon Cooperative. There's nothing like it on the west coast, although the idea has really caught on in the mid-west & east. It's an urban, age 55+ Co-op Community with bright, fun people who love the energy of the city. It's located right on the streetcar line in a very walkable neighborhood (NW Portland). It will be highly sustainable and completed in about 2 years. Several years ago a bunch of friends got together to create this concept because they were disapointed with the options for "retirement communities". This is VERY different.

Check it out at The Sheldon Cooperative - Community, Security, Home (http://www.thesheldoncooperative.com/ - broken link). You can also join our facebook fan page where we'll keep you up to date on the project and also what else is going on in Portland. Maybe it will give you some help in your decision-making.

Portland is really progressive and community minded. It is also very environmentally friendly, with plenty of recreation areas. If those things interest you, I'd come here. I only just got here and am loving it. Apparently, they call it "the Portland Flow"...Things just seem to fit together when you get here!

I currently live in Las Vegas. I have lived here since moving here from SoCal for almost 4 years. I recently visited Portland for a few days, and it was awesome! I loved the downtown atmosphere, and the people were so friendly it scared me. Scared me only because people in Vegas are self righteous, and inconsiderate personified. Regardless of where you go in Las Vegas, people who live here don't care, and people who visit are only here to make a mess of things and leave. Tourism is the thriving source of funds in Las Vegas, and people from all over the world are constantly coming here to party. If you want to retire here I strongly suggest living as far from the strip as possible. Crime is mostly around the strip area, but its spreading everywhere at a rapid pace due to the unbelievable number of people moving here daily from SoCal and everywhere else. Don't let the bright lights fool you. This town only cares about one thing. Money. If you have it, you'll love it here. If you don't, good luck finding work. Unemployment in Las Vegas is at 26% right now. Thats more than 1 in 4 people are unemployed. Another thing Las Vegas is famous for is Grand Theft Auto. I myself have had my car stolen. Also the police are out of control. They recently laid off a lot of North Vegas Police, so for some reason they thought it would be a good idea to post numerous billboards stating that 'due to recent layoffs of North Vegas Police, we can no longer guarantee your safety'. Something tells me that if they truly cared about keeping people safe, they wouldn't advertise that. On the positive in Vegas, the traffic isn't bad. Rush hour is usually about 15-20 minutes max of being stuck in traffic, unless there is an accident. Lots of things to do at the casinos and just about everywhere. One perk of catering to every tourists wants and needs is that locals can reap the benefits of that. Pretty much anything you can imagine wanting to do, its here. Thats about all the good I can say. I've never actually LIVED in Portland but can tell you from living in Vegas the Portland seemed very, very nice, calm, and friendly.
