does anyone have opinions on whether or not to get cable or satellite? Is the only cable company in the vegas area Cox Cable? Who do you currently use for satellite, dish or directv?

General rule is that anyone needing broad band internet gets Cox.

The sports aficionados get Direct.

Rarely you see Direct and dsl. Mostly Direct and Cox.

None of the other internet services approach Cox.

I have cox cable and internet, my preference would be Cox for cable and Dish, but whoever built this house only pulled 2 catv cables from the smartbox and you need 3 lines for the newer HD systems.

I'm not a sports guy at all, so the sports packages are not considered part of my criteria. Cox Cable is way, way overpriced.

I got Cox and I am happy with the service for Cable and Internet but whoa....I friggin pay for it. That reminds me, I am dropping all my premium channels tomorrow.

I have their mid tier internet package and cable with all the premium channels and they charge $150 a month for it. It used to be 130 or so. I guess they raised their rates recently.

The service is extremely reliable but overpriced.

That's interesting. I thought that they were quite reasonable, if not downright inexpensive, when you bundle TV, Internet & a land-line with unlimited long distance.

Back in Maryland, Comcast was way more expensive, so I went with Verizon Fios service.

I concur, it was much cheaper with the bundle from Cox than going with DirectTV especially when you factor in the Tivo and HD receivers. I will say that Direct does offer much better HD service than Cox in terms of clarity, that's what I miss back in Va. with HDNet watching hockey games.

Nonsense.

10Mbit/sec dry-loop DSL from CenturyLink is $30/month. That significantly undercuts Cox's price for 10Mbit/sec service. This is their new "Pure" branded service.

Not universally avaiable and often troublesome. Decline to provide it in much of the NW. On a quick check I can't even find out if the "pure" package is real.

In truth however the reason we know that DSL was not available in the area was because Cox also was not available in a particular small tract. The cost of adding Cox to a small mildly isolated 4 home tract is about $45,000.

If you can't get Cox or DSL the options are rather bleak. A commercial microwave link at hundreds per month was the only at speed option.
