Aloha All

I have a house in BC and I want to take out the grass and put a low water use yard in. I would like to have some accent plants around the house and a fruit tree in the center. I live in Hawaii. I have no idea what grows well there. What would you plant there? And why? What type of fruit tree would do well and produce there? I will lay a drip line in so water will not be a problem.

I thank you all for your ideas.

do you get the water from the las vegas valley water district.. if so, dont pull it out until they come and measure your lawn.. they pay you to take it out if you put desert landscape in... as for types of plants.. not so sure myself but i have fruit trees that do well (apricot, apple, lime, orange, peach, and plum)... i just planted tomatoes so i can let you know on that.. for the other stuff, we have a fan palm, queen palm, and something that flowers trumpets.

I grow peaches, apricots, apples, pomegranites and citrus. Everything grows with water.

Go to the display gardens at the Springs Preserves. Have great samples of everything that works for landscaping plants..

I don't know what I really got but I have two of one or the other and bear fruit like there is no tomorrow. Go a musician over a block or two who come over every year and raids my trees. must take away a couple of bushels. Other than that I eat a few. ;They are very hardy and spread widely around here. I did not plant either one.

Actually that is an orange tree. But I have a lemon and a kumquat. The Admiral made me put the grapefruit out of its misery after a watering failure left it a single live branch on a dead trunk. Had that one for over 20 yearts...played taps on the hifi as it was lowered into the garbage cans.

And today one of those long gawky things that have a cluster of leaves at the tip came back from the dead. Another 20 year older that had suffered from accidental neglect. But it is clearly going to come back.

The next project is the huge acacia pile we had by the front door and tried to cut back hard. Died. Replacements soon.

Where did you get the tomatoes this time of year? Does Star have them? I'd like to grow some more for the second season.

Peaches do really well here. I have a little dwarf tree that is about two feet tall right now, and it was loaded with fruit. Thought it would fall down it's so small.
