Personally I'm getting used to the look of a fake lawn, synthetic. It grows very well in BC and other places and looks real. Definitely not the stuff you used to see in the 70s. We decided to put some in our back yard to coordinate with the golf course fairway view we have. It is much cooler than the rock and doesn't take any water.

The kids, who were used to our decorative rock (when its in your yard it's not gravel) backyard in Arizona, think the grass is awesome. They take their shoes off and dance on it. Freaks the dog out. He keeps trying to eat it.

Fake grass has an initial expense, like carpet, but over time its worth it. I think its a great idea for the water company to offer an incentive. We weren't able to get any money since we were replacing dirt, tumbleweed, and rocks.
