Hey, folks -
I'm going to be spending a week in Vegas with some friends. We're planning on grilling/smoking a few times and were interested in finding a specialty meat store / butcher shop.
Any recommendations?
Thanks much!

Smells bad. Try Whole Foods. Not cheap very good. On Charleston near Fort Apache.

I disagree. I find the place much like an old-time butcher shop. And the prices at Whole Foods are not only not cheap, they are sky-high! As for them being very good, I found the filets at Larry's to be the best meat in town--including whole foods.

Yes, yes, Olecapt, I know you will rebut me and tell me how I don't know anything.

Well can't leave you disappointed. When we moved here tried Larry's based on some locals. Smelled bad, meat at best adequate.

Three years or so ago had another friend convince us to try it again. Same result. Wife will no longer go in the joint. She does not like the open air butcher shops in Mexico either.

On another list a couple of other people described a similar experience.

So it has been a couple of years...maybe they have cleaned up or changed. Looks the same though so I would not want to bet on it.

I was in Whole Foods early in the week and found no detectible odors.

I agree that Whole Foods is expensive. For a lot of meat I would go to good ole Sams Club. But you want good prime meat I don't know anywhere that beats Whole Foods.

I would stay away from Albertsons...For supermarkets, I think that Smith's/Food4Less has the best meat and Sunflower Market as well...

Village Meat & Wines - 5025 S Eastern Ave # 23, southeast corner of E Tropicana and S Eastern.

Family owned with lots of funky condiments for marinading and grilling.
Great specialty sausages.

I searched and sampled several butcher shops when I first got to Vegas and found these folks to be the best combination of price and quality.

I usually use hamburg as a measure. If the shop can't grind the right cuts they'll probably make mistakes with more expensive fare. Theirs is tasty with no gristle.

Larry's Great Western Meat has been, IMO, inconsistant. The last time I went there, the hamburg was riddled with gristle. However, your mileage may vary.

Sunflower Market on the SW corner of Pecos and Flamingo is also very good.

I'll second Village Meats & Wines. They have some of the best sausage available anywhere.
