It's not as bad a job as some people think, and it's hard work. Only at some restaurants you may not get to work full time, so don't limit your work search to one chain.
Buzz is right. Fast food is hard work and not for everyone. You have to stand on your feet all day and it is hot, and very stressful. I know, my first job was at Jack in the Box when I was 16. You might want to look at getting a job as a security guard like me. I make $9.50 an hour for literally doing nothing. I work inside an office building overnights. I have a kitchen that I can cook in, a computer with internet, and believe it or not, they even give us cable television
. It is just like being at home. By the way, I am at work right now

Its not impossible but it is going to be rough. I have a couple questions though do you live on your own now? Because 100 for groceries isnt much at all even for 1 person I think that you might want to redo your list of expenses. Have you ever actually lived in a rough neighborhood because if you havent you might want to think about that. I think that you should really save up where you are and try to find a job that you know you can live off before you make the decision to move. Why move if your going to be in a worst situation then you are now?

I am wondering if I was working at a fast-food place (if they even have fast-food jobs in this economy) or something similar, could I make it? I plan on going back to college and UNLV has exactly what I need. Plus, the 24 hour transit on CAT really interests me too since I don't have a car.
I can live on a pretty thin budget and I have no problem living in North Las Vegas or down Fremont as long as the crime isn't so bad that they'll steal my shoes as I'm waiting for the bus. Gunshots don't bother me as long as I can't see them

If I was making minimum wage ($7.25 in July 2009) working 40 hours a week or so, could I find a place to rent for $500 or less? Sorry this post is so long, I'm just really trying to get real facts here so I can make an informed decision.
By the way, I figure I'll spend about $100/month on groceries and $100 on miscellaneous items and $100 on CAT pass. So If I can get a place for $500 average for the year (including my utility bills) I could probably just get by and maybe even save a few bucks along the way.
I think you are too educated to work fast food. Unless you plan on being a supervisor. I can tell you are educated by your grammer, paragraph and sentence structure.
If you really want to live in Vegas and are worried about enough money for food and you don't mind working fast food, then you should consider getting a job in a casino as a busboy/girl. You will earn alot more than $7.00 an hour. You will earn around $10.00 an hour plus about $50.00 in tips. You also get to eat for free in the casino, so you don't have to worry about buying groceries like you said. And yes, you can get a one bedroom apartment right across the street from the casino you work at for around $500.00 a month. So yes, what you are trying to accomplish by moving to vegas is possible.

Not that I am advocating the fast-food industry...but generally, when I was MUCH younger, all of my fastfood experience as a kid, you ALWAYS were given free meals during your workshifts.
Granted, not the healthiest, but it brings down the grocery bill.
Also, to people who say you CANT live on a fastfood job...true...YET, many people do it all the time. It certainly isnt easy, but that is the reality for many Americans across the United States already. Plus rentals in Las Vegas isn't like being in SF or NYC, so I'd say Vegas isn't that much different than doing fastfood work in Wisconsin or wherever.

Anything is possible.
You can always work fast food and rent a cheap room while you explore other employment.
Worst-case scenario, a rented room and low-paying job is easy to leave behind.

When I was a kid, I worked at Jack in the Box, then Carl's jr. Neither one gave me free meals, it was a 50% employee discount. But, you could still get the food that was past the hold times for free. I really do not think you could live on a fast food job, at least neither of these two places. What Jack in the box did was downright criminal. They used to watch what the percentage of labor to the sales were, and if it was over a certain percent, they would start sending people home. Then it got so bad that they starting making people work off the clock when the labor percentage was to high. I should have reported them to the labor board. Carls jr did the same with percentage of labor, with the exception of making people work for free. Needless to say, I could never get 40 hours a week at neither place. I would be scheduled for 40, but I would only end up getting 25 or so.

This is exactly like the fast food restaurant I used to work at, once labor hit over 17%, people got sent home, then it got more stressful if it got busy...IMO, your not gonna make the hours you want and its just not worth the stress...

I think we'd all agree that fast-food isn't worth it on any level. You work MUCH harder than anyone else and get paid way less.
BUT, personally, I admire the OP for considering it. Honestly, I was the same when I was a kid. Even when I graduated from college, I wasn't able to get good jobs. I moved to Portland Oregon on a whim and parked cars for $5.50/hour, and I thought it was GREAT - much better than $3.35 working at a factory back in Michigan. (Early 1990s).
Through that, you gain a strong work ethic. Of course now, I've worked my way well past that, but real work doesn't bother me at all, because no matter what I do in life, it will ALWAYS be significantly easier than working in factories, fastfood, parking cars, gas stations, and all the rest I did up until I was 25 years old.
THe concept that 'fastfood is too hard', so its better to stay in your home town and live at mom and dads forever, is a bizarre concept to me. I think that is the wrong message to send to someone who appears more than willing to do it.

I think jobs like yours are few. Do homeowner's association fees help to pay your wage?

Why not just stay in Wisconsin and make minimum wage. i lived in las Vegas for 2 years and i was living on about 30000 per year and it was tough . Fremont street housing near downtown is horrible stay away if you value your life. 500 dollars is your budget you better just rent a room in a nice house in a safe neighborhood. do your homework before moving out thier living on a low wage can be very hard on you.
