I am not sure what area of town you are wanting, but you are going to be really limited with only being able to pay $500 per month. If you are alone making the move you might want to sharing an apartment with someone in a similar situation so you can get into a better area.

usually 500 a month is Sierra Vista Ave. aka Crack Alley. I think that if you went to 600 or 700 you could upgrade to somewhere off of Fort Apache.

Ft.Apache area is more like $900 these days. Even for the cheapest place.
Try someone on Nellis Blvd near the base. It's not the worst place, and it is cheap. It's old, noisy planes, etc. But its a start. And lots of shopping nearby.

Even that's probably out of the price range. We rented at Nellis and Vegas Valley in 1994 and we were paying $495/month for a 2br apartment back then....

True. When we first moved to Las Vegas almost 10 years ago we rented an apartment in that area as well. It was over that then. But then again it was for a two bedroom apartment. I don't know what a one bedroom would have been or would be now....

I suggest you start combing through Craigslist. Lots of rentals there...

Here are apartments/condos/houses for rent:

No wonder you hate Vegas now, it all makes sense.

I don't hate Vegas. Not at all. There are just some things about it that I don't like. I've said over and over that Green Valley and Summerlin are great. I've pointed out many good things about Vegas since using this site, but I am also not shying about telling it like it is when it comes to the less than desirable things as well.
