Hey, we're moving to LV in the coming months. We just put an offer in on a property and hopefully we'll get it. If not then we'll try another one. Anyway, I was wondering if there was anyplace around the area to escape from the summer heat. Any sort of mountainous area where they have cabins to buy just as a summer retreat. I know about Mt. Charleston but haven't seen much up there for sale. Is there anywhere else I might look?

Thanks,
Joe in WV

P.S. I know, I haven't even moved there yet and I'm already complaining about the heat!

The heat in Vegas is not bad at all bc it's so dry.

When I visited in the summer all I needed were the windows rolled down and the AC seats. I might mention that I DID keep the sun roof closed though LOL

Locally Mt. Charleston and Cold Creek. Both are reasonably expensive. There are also some places on the way to Pahrump though they are not all that high.

The normal local solution is Utah.

Mt Charleston is your best best, about a 45 min drive max most any part of Vegas.

Heat is heat when it is over 110 it is hot plain and simple "dry heat" or not. Good luck with purchasing your house.

I agree....up to 110 heat is good....over 110 heat is bad.....to aclimate yourself to Las Vegas, you should turn your oven on and sit inside it for one hour a day [or until golden Brown]

Really? Last time I drove through the neighborhood up there (which was last summer), it seemed that almost half the houses had for sale signs.

<checking listings>

Yep, a search on realtor.com gave a bunch of 'em. Search on zip code 89124.

Humid heat is no better. It got up to 100+ here in the summer, then to -20 in the winter. I'm not sure how that is more "liveable"...

because it doesn't feel like an oven or a hairdryer, and your nose doesn't dry up and bleed in the humid heat either and your skin doesn't flake and your hair isn't full of dandruff

Very true, but when you step out of your car, it often feels like someone threw a hot wet towel on your body, or, by the time you get from car to grocery store, you look like you've been swimming. They both have up and down sides, I think it's a personal opinion. I've lived in LA, FL, MI, IL, & NV and prefer NV to any of those places. Even though the beaches were quite nice in FL.
