I have a good friend who lives directly across the street from the west side of the base. The side closest to Las Vegas. She has a lovely small home and most of the people on her street have built observation decks to watch the planes taking off. We talked about safety and she said most of her neighbors were military and she felt quite safe there. I took my dog out running every day and it seemed like a great, quiet neighborhood. There are rental homes in the area too. I hope your SIL checks out this area. No commute and it seems very safe. I can't say that for all of North Las Vegas.

I would be very careful. That area is in the city and you can look at it with the crime mapper. I believe the numbers along both LV Blvd and Nellis Blvd are horrendous. Right up there with the worst in the City. There may be adequate little tracts back off these but it would take local knowledge to find a safe one and the surrounding area would still be the pits...

I remember most of the streets had Hawaiian names and the name of her street started with a K. I know you are a whiz with this stuff. It was a neighborhood with tile roofs, relatively new, most homes under 1500sf. Home prices @ 250K.

Kanaka Peak Maybe? Only thing close. It is actually south and east of Nellis and you better love airplanes. A lttle rough by suburban standards but three or four X better than anything off Nellis or LV Blvd.

Few rentals. Basically owner occupied. None available at the moment which may attest to popularity when they do appear. Around $1050..

I did mis write a bit. The area around Nelliis is Clark County not C of LV.

That's it! I didn't think it was a bad bet considering the other closeby areas!

If you want to live over there, batten down the hatches. I hear from some people that live next to or near Nellis that when the planes take off, all their dishes start shaking and dancing in the cupboard. I'd be worried about dishes breaking.
I used to live near a base in Calif, and I could never hear anything at all when the planes would take off. And they flew quite low too. Id never do it again ever.

I used to live over there just down the hill from the Mormon Temple. If you don't mind gun shots at night, graffiti, vandalism and fearing that your house is going to burn to the ground on the 4th of July, then that's the place to go. Otherwise avoid it like the plague.

I stayed with my SIL and daughter on base in Alaska and didnt find the planes too much of a bother. Maybe just when they woke us in the morning. From all that I've read on this forum it would seem that every neighborhood will have its pros and cons, its up to us to balance them out with our own personal likes and dislikes I suppose.
