I would really like to know. I could find a decent 1 br/1 bath in Las Vegas in a good area for well under $1000, but in Los Angeles it's almost impossible to find that combination. Why is this? I would have put LA and Las Vegas on the same level being that LA is the film industry capital of the U.S. and Las Vegas being entertainment/casino capital of the U.S.
I think hotel prices in both cities are completely ridiculous but it's naturally expected. They are one of the richiest cities in the U.S.
But I was really suprised when I saw apartment prices here. I know alot of people complain about houses prices in LV, but I would never even consider trying to rent one anyway. Can someone give me some insight on this? Thx

Default Supply and demand

More people want to live in LA than Vegas.

And it seems everyone wants to move to LA(and all of Southern California),no matter the cost.It might be 3-1 or something if you asked people where you would want to move,LA,or Las Vegas.

Same case in San Francisco. Everyone seems to want to move there too and the amount of housing vs. the amount of people that want to live there is not a good ratio, so it costs more.

Because LA is coastal, and LV isn't.

Los Angeles is a real city. Not that Vegas is not a desirable place to live, but you are comparing apples to oranges. LA has much more going on economically, socially, culturally... etc... Its not a surprise that Vegas is still cheap.

Disagree strongly. LA is a classical SW city...just like Vegas and Phoenix and Tucson and San Diego. It is a sprawling megalpolis of huge dimension and population. But the major advantage is size.

Las Vegas is much more a sub city of LA. Even at two million it is still subsumed under the power and strength of LA.

"Real" is almost exactly the same for the citihood of LA and LV. There are real cities of the ultimate urban sort in the US. Boston and NY particularly...Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and such at a lesser level.

The economies are different. LA is a huge and varied one including technology, education and corporate. LV is a one industry town with the engine being the strip. LV is much more blue collar.

But when all is sad and done LA has geography. It is a wonderful basin against the sea surrounded by mountains...and the coastal plan goes south for 100 miles. The climate is exceptionally nice. It lacks the extremes of virtually everywhere else.

And there is only so much of it. Dallas will never cost like LA...because it can grow practically without limit. The limits drive the value...

Great answers everyone and take it from someone who moved from the coastal area of LA to Las Vegas. Location Location Location is always the name of the game when renting or buying. The metro population of LA is enormous (can tell by the traffic) so if you want to live in the land of fruit and nuts LA is the place. My experience with Vegas is not that great and the rude people here are actually friendlier rude people than LA.go figure.

Vegas is hot climate and hot tempered. I have visited here before and loved the ambiance of the strip but living here is different. In coastal LA no air conditioning required, no heat required, 3 hour commutes common (and talk about road rage) and the beautiful polluted water of the ocean offsets the great weather. Now San Diego is another story WOW!

Just always remember what the Realtors say LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. it makes all the difference. If you want to move to the southern US you can for a song. I sold my moms home in a town of 300 for 20K that is 2800 sq ft on 3 acres for that amount. But you would have to drive a 100 miles for a mall or a Costco or Walmart. So location location location

We must all be nuts paying these rental prices and home prices when we could settle in some small berg and have clean air, friendly folks, and not a care in the world.
