I live in NY and my mom has been living in an assisted living facility in Las Vegas for a month. She is 86 and not very happy there; I am trying to find a more affordable facility that will mainly accept her SSI, while we apply for veteran's survivor benefits to help subsidize the rent. Right now, my husband and I have no choice but to make up the difference, and we cannot afford to do this for too long. Can anyone recommend such a place or places? My fear is that she will end up in a nursing home and all I've heard about Las Vegas nursing homes is she will end up dying there before she has to. It happened to my dad out there in January.

Carolp, I wish I had an answer for you. I'm dealing with similar issues with my Dad right now. I wish I would have heard about LV nursing homes BEFORE I had to deal with them!

The state run nursing homes/assisted living homes are not the greatest here at all. There just simply isn't a lot of money in the State budget to care for all the seniors who cannot afford to pay for their care and who rely on government (SSI, Medicare, Medicaid) insurance.

Unless you're willing to pay between $1900-2500 a month for a really good private care facility, you just ain't gonna find one...

We went through this whole scene just a couple of years ago with an elderly auntie who was left in our care...we paid (along with her medicare) for her to stay in a private assisted living/nursing place...it was beautiful, the residents treated extremely well and all, but oh boy, it was expensive..even after her medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield kicked in. Insurance didn't pay for the whole tab...and she had no other private insurance, so we put up the difference every month...

And...we had to wait. Some of the places we chose had a waiting list even with those exorbitant fees!

Seniors need to have plenty of $$$ in order to maintain a good quality of life if the situation dictates that they need to be placed in an assisted/nursing type facility here in Nevada.
