Do you think a city/town can have an overall vibe to it?? I guess it is a matter of personal perception...so....

For those living here a long time, do you think Vegas has a "sleazy" vibe to it??

Maybe sleazy is not the right word. Tough? Fast? Not wholesome?

Anyway I have been here 25 years, noticed it right from the start, but after awhile adjusted, found nice normal people but I still get that overall vibe from the feeling of this city (although I will say the bigger the city gets the easier it is to find regular everyday folks).

I definately wish I could leave but can't because of family/business comittments.

Maybe I am just jaded?

I never gotten a sleazy feel from the town, but I have always gotten a feeling of desperation here. Again, it mostly happens in certain areas but it easy to find nice calm areas that you can enjoy.

Part of the problem I think it the myth that not only is everything possible in Vegas, but that if you didn't do everything possible you wasted your trip. I know family members (on my side) who complain about not being able to eat at all the different buffets during their trip, and they don't believe me when I tell them all of them are pretty much the same anyway. Now my wife's family asked me, and I kid you not, which hotel I was going to live at when I told them we were moving to the Vegas area. They never been anywhere other than the airport, the strip, and freemont, so they figured there were no houses.

Yup, it's the nature of the place..always has been, always will be. It's what the tourists want and demand, isn't it?

If Las Vegas was "wholesome" we all wouldn't be here....

I'm here close to 30 years now, I understand and "get" the same vibe now as I did back then when I first got here, and the REASON why Las Vegas has become so popular hasn't changed at all....

Hope things work out for you and you find happiness!

I certainly can feel the vibe of desperation. It seems like a lot of people come out here to give up on themselves. Of course, many also come to make themselves a better life.

The entire city (not the surrounding areas) seems like it is covered in a scum. From the nudy fliers all over the streets, to the bums sleeping in tents off of the 15 freeway, there is just a dirty and depressing vibe in the city.

On the other hand, the surrounding areas are no different than greater Phoenix or LA.

Also, does it ever seem to anyone else like Las Vegas is a rough town? Just seems like soooooooo many people have a chip on their shoulder. I think people get so used to people walking up to them asking for money and the overall neediness of this community that they just become ice cold to it.

I don't think most of Vegas has a sleazy vibe. Much of it is a nice town for the most part. However, I have always thought the Strip and surrounding areas as having a tawdry edge to it. And I looked "tawdry" up and it's defined as "cheap and gaudy in appearance or quality, tastlessly showy". I think that covers it.

But what the heck, the tourists come and leave their money and that's good for everybody in Vegas.

Probably less sleazy than in the years past.
LV is becoming more upscale not only on the strip but in the residential areas.
I wish they would kick out the people that hand out the porn stuff on the strip and the mag rags on the sidewalks. The amount of hookers, excuse me escorts, doesn't help the image also.
Today, I would not quite call LV sleazy but a city with a fair amount of it.

Gawdy and showy? Absolutely. Sleazy, sure depending on where you are at and who you ask I suppose. Rough? Not hardly. I've been in much more dangerous situations in Southern California and Seattle than I've ever been in here. SoCal and Seattle definitely have their sleazy parts as well.

Please keep in mind that I am absolutely not saying that Vegas is wholesome or doesn't have it's element of sleaze. We are world reknowned as "Sin City" after all. I just think that the image is so played up for the tourists that even if it was more wholesome the stigma would still be there, and people would still feel the sleaze.

I dont get a sleezy feeling unless I have to go to city hall for something. I also feel sleeze when cops are nearby.

One might get the feeling when driving through the very old section of down town. I dont. I love the old stuff, I just wish investment in downtown would take place at a quicker pace. But with the current depression in LV that ain't happening soon.

I do feel dirty and violated when I have to go past one of those keystone cop guards gates in some communities. Those useless wastes of human flesh think they are the great Messiah. Cop wanabes who could not pass the acadamy. They probably make the standard $8/hr unless they have a carry permit then they get $10.

One might get that feeling while walking on the strip and those illegal aliens push those brochures in your hand even if you have a child in the other. I dont agree with any censorship but that is just plain wrong.

You might also feel a dirty sleez if you go behind the Stratosphere on those back streets. Man that is like walking through a firefight just north of the DMZ in North Vietnam 1968. You might get that same feeling on MLK and Washington area. Very very dangerous areas.
