Hi,

Currently im in Canada finishing my BA here and i was interested in possibly pursuing the BSc in Gaming Management offered at UNLV. Id prefer to stay away from dorms at UNLV as they dont seem to have private rooms, and by the time i would get there i would be 22-23 and i would be surrounded by partying 18-19 year olds, just not my idea of fun, im out of that stage. So i kinda wanted an apartment to myself. Anyhow, id need a F-1 student visa which only allows me to work 20 hrs a week max at the UNLV campus only. Anyhow, i was wondering what areas of Las Vegas i might be able to find a flexible lease term apartment that is extremely safe? As ill be coming from Canada, im used to some crime, but certain parts of LV on visits in the past have scared me to be honest lol. Ive found myself on the wrong side of Downtown LV before! Anyone have recommendations for me? Good names of apartments to look at?

Thanks
Mike

the average age of a UNLV student is 27, I believe, so it may not be filled with 18-19 y/o partyers...

If you're concerned with safety you should stay in the dorms where you'll have round the clock security. The UNLV area isn't as bad as the East Fremont area you mentioned in your post, but it's still a little rougher than you're used to. Another place worth considering is the high rise apartments on the corner of Flamingo/Maryland, which will also have security at the door.

You should contact the UNLV housing office to make sure you can't get a private room before deciding on other accomodations.

Yea im gonna contact the offices at UNLV, good to know that most students are indeed that age group or older. Any specific areas to avoid? Ive been reading alot on this site so far, and i have to say im kinda nervous about living there. Yet in past visits ive felt safe. I guess for a student i need a flexible living option with a rent hovering the 600-800 mark for a small area. Safety is my main concern really. I have even considered the green valley or Summerlin area, how far are these with traffic to the school?

Green Valley would be a 20-25 minute commute each way to UNLV. Silverado Ranch is even closer, like 10-15 minutes away, and just as safe, zip code 89123.

As far as the UNLV area, I think the only part that would be off limits would be the area north of campus. Mark a one mile radius around the intersection of Twain/Swenson and cross that off your list. The area east of UNLV is mostly student apartments and definitely affordable. If you have a car though, you should look into Silverado Ranch.

Hi Mike. I'm looking to have students lease my condo. I have a potential international student ready to move in so the situation may be only for one room with him as the roommate. He is a very nice male Chinese student in the Master of Arts in Economics program. Since you are also an international student, a furnished place might be what you are looking for. If he takes the master bedroom, the guest bedroom will be available with its own bathroom and a long twin bed for $400. If you want the master, that would be around $450. The nieghborhood is working class like most of the area around UNLV, but I consider the development safe. My craigslist posting is below.

Uhh... He started this thread over two years ago. Unless he's working on his masters, he is long gone.

Wow, old thread. Anyway, in case this thread may be of use to other potential students, Rebel Place would be a good starting point. Brand new apartments in a gated community, close to campus.
