We just bought a home in the Las Vegas Silverado Ranch area which is supposed to be a "good area" and were broken into (population is growing and so is the crime). We like it here but we do miss the diversity of NY (museums, zoo, parks in the summer, amusement parks, etc)...if you want any of these things you'll have to drive to Cali. Send me a PM if you'd like more info, have a good one!
I'm glad to see so many residents being from NY. I'll be taking a look in March at a few complexes to rent for the first year and then probably look into purchasing a home next year. I'll be moving permanantly from Nassau County, NY this coming May. Do you know anything about or have any opinions regarding the Lone Mountain area? I was looking into The Boulders and Shadow Hills.

Also what moving company did those moving from East Coast use? I found the website www.movingscam.com very helpful and couldn't believe how many scams and bad companies are out there.

Thanks in advance to those who reply.

Just got a big kick out of this post. Made me laugh. Very funny.
Being from NY, anytime I drive to NJ to visit family, I go nuts, so I don't know about the traffic being better in NJ, I'd hope not. haha

The area is fine. Quiet, nice parks, adequate neighborhood shopping etc. The individual places look very nice...but they are too new to have much real history. There are also very nice condo rentals in that area in about the same price range.

I know this scenario has been posted ad nauseum on here, but I wanted to ask a few things myself. I am Long Island born and raised, lived here my whole life, very much wanting to move to Vegas recently for the weather, cost of living, party-life, etc as I have grown tired of the cost of living, weather, mentality here and I need a change. I'm 23, single, so nothing holding me back except finding a job, and a place to live. Got a degree in economics, but I notice not a lot of finance-type jobs out there but I'll pretty much do anything. I'm going to supplement my income with poker as I have in the past few years also, I hope. I'd love to meet some ex-new yorkers out there, seems there are a lot of them.

1) Job-wise, what is the best approach to finding a decent one, I want to find one before I go out there, was thinking of substitute teaching for a little while if I have to, I can deal with bad kids I just dont want to be threatened... but the newspapers classified doesnt seem to have much in my fields, anybody have a tip on where to go/companies, etc that might be hiring professional type jobs or insurance/financial things?

2) Lot of stuff on here about WHERE to live, and I read it all. I know summerlin, GV, etc are the places, but at my age I want to live in an area with lots of young people, but obviously not a ghetto, maybe some younger working people. What areas would have lots of young people casino workers and some cute girls I can meet? I have considered the south strip, and some of the west side, but I know theres loads of ghettos out there and I will not live where my safety is threatened, but I'd rather live in a younger apt or condo type setting thats safe as opposed to renting a room or apt in summerlin or gv for right now, I am smart enough to know a $600/mo apt rental must be a dump in a bad area, generally, so I want to avoid those, south strip past mandalay, or parts of westside, or henderson or summerlin if need be although older people, would be where I'd like to look

3) I know the casino stuff, is there anywhere else to meet people relatively young? It's such a transient place, casino-dominated, and very hard to meet people and to get lost in the shuffle it seems.

I'm sure I'll have some other questions/thoughts and didn't want to repeat people's, but it's a lot to digest and it's far away so I needed some insights from olecapt and whoever else on here. Thank you very much in advance
-Mike

Summerlin or Green Valley probably aren't for you, but the South Strip is, also there is the area around Flamingo/Tropicana and Decatur that olecapt is always talking about for singles.

Thanks......Is the entire south strip south of mandalay bay safe, decent overall? dont want to end up in crackland, doesnt have to be beautiful just a place I can go home to and sleep quietly...Flamingo/Tropicana and Decatur is the west side right, do you know of any apt buildings or just the general area is young? what about the UNLV area, not the best right? This is going to take me a few months to figure out, finding a job is hard enough, but right now the south strip or the other area you mentioned looks good, maybe olecapt will chime in with more details because I dont know the ins and outs of the neighborhoods and streets, south strip is vague and i guess would even go past the airport, not sure

I don't think you'll see many problems down that way. We rented an apartment at 9000 S Las Vegas Blvd in the late 90's- it was brand new at the time and was great. The area is still growing as they fill in all of the vacant land down there, with a lot of mid-rise and loft-style condos. I'd think those are very popular with the younger crowd.

Try it by zip codes. 89147 is west along trop. 89117 is west north of 89147. 89123 is what is now called the South Strip. The area around UNLV is tough particularly to the strip side. Lots of young...but lots of problems. If you are big city street wise you will be fine. If you ain't don't. Look south if you do want to try around UNLV.
