Have been here since December and have an ongoing Bark Scorpion infestation in our brand new Mountains Edge home at Yellowstone. We are on our third exterminator and get monthly service. In fact we were sprayed three days ago and I sit here with a newly dead Bark Scorpion from the closet in one of our rooms (quite alive until I nailed him with a shoe). We have removed all our plate covers and light fixtures sprayed behind them, sprayed up in the attic, the garage, all room , all around the house and they are immune from the spray I sumise. We are thinking to go to twice a month spraying but I cannot see how that is going to work if they are alive and kicking days after a spraying. With two young children and an elderly mother in the house I am quite worried. My wife has already stepped on one in the middle of the hallway and they seem quite willing to wander the house. My ten month old daughter would probably want to secure it to put it in her mouth. Any ideas on how to beat this problem ?

Niels
Do you think it could be because it is a new construction? Maybe it stirred them up from their natural habitat?

Ugh. I feel for you. I don't know if I could sleep at night.

Bug Bully will be along soon but I don't think they are very controllable with spray. You can however kill them mostly off the old fashioned way.
For a bark scorpion hunt you get a black light and a stick. Go forth in the dark with the black light. They fluouresce very nicely. When you see one whack it. Keep track of where you see them. They live somewhere. The colonies are generally local and don't spread a lot. I know of a couple in Sun City Summerlin But I think they are only a 100 yards or so in diameter.

If you find a place where they are concentrated get rid of the junk and low brush and places where they may hide. Be suspicious of landscaping particularly the good old palm tree. They need water and like to hide in, what else, bark.

On the house get out the caulking gun. Every little crack gets caulked. They have to come in through a hole or a crack. No holes, no cracks, no scorpions.

Regular pest control sprays do not work that well for scorpions. Due to their body, which is hard shelled, they do not ingest the products that well. The easiest way to get them to ingest the products is placing Diatomaceous Earth around the foundation of the home. DE is actually a pool cleaner, which has very fine glass particles in it. The product cuts up the scorpions body so they can ingest the products faster, so that they can die quicker. This method suprisingly is not well known in the Industry. When I was with my old company, I had to tell the Service Manager about it. He had 10 years in the industry.

Use the black light to see where the concentration is at the most, so your pest control technician knows where he needs to concentrate on.

We do this treatment, but you can also do it yourself. The DE you can get at Lowes or even Smiths for that matter. They have the DE in the pool cleaner sections or at Lowes it is in the Pest control area.

Ugh. *shudder* please tell me that photo is not to scale

I'm not afraid, just don't like them all too much.. we had a HUGE mormon cricket invasion when we first moved into our unit. finally went away after a while (and re-weatherstripping the doors, etc). was told it was common in new construction areas. Thankfully, haven't seen any scorpions or stuff like that.. If i do, I know who to call!!

Huge bark scorpion infestation in Mountains edge community in Las Vegas. My 2 year was stung and almost died. As far as I know there is no way to get rid of them other than a black light and a stick.
Most pest control companies offer this service.
If you live in Mountain's Edge call a company to come inspect, especially if you have children. If you do not live in Mountains Edge don't move here. Stay away. Everyone I have spoken too that lives here has found them in there house/garage/yard. And these are "bark scorpions" very dangerous.

A bigger problem for me is bedbugs. The last time I stayed in Las Vegas, I got a hotel room that appeared to be well kept and clean. I got multiple bites on my legs that from my research matched all the symptoms of bedbugs. Irritating, and took a while to heal. This was the first time I had an encounter with bedbugs in my 50+ years, and when I was younger I stayed in some cheapass places. It was disgusting, and I've cut down on my trips to LV since.

Tons of places have issues with Bed Bugs, not just Las Vegas. The more people travel around to differant areas around the world, the more they get spread around. We use to only see them around the strip, but now they are becoming an issue all over the valley.

Simple trick, for whatever hotel you stay at, in whatever town it is in. As soon as you open the door, leave your bags at the door, take the sheets off of the corners and check the seams of the bed. That is where you find them if the room has Bed Bugs. The bugs are small and black, flat round, oval shape. Also pay attention to small smeared blood stains. Alot of times if you roll over while you are sleeping then it smashes them and leaves the stain.

If you do find them, you can probably get your room comped. But then again, you will most Likely not want to stat there! LOL. If it was me, I would be feeling things crawling on me, even if there was nothing.
