I know a lot of folks are looking to move to the Las Vegas Valley area and asking about what areas to avoid, etc. Well, I've been doing some of my own research and thought I'd provide my findings here in case it can benefit others. The first thing I looked for was areas and neighborhoods with frequent shootings/stabbings that resulted in someone dying. I found this updated map of homicides:

https://www.8newsnow.com/homicides-2017-2019/

As you can see in the map above, violent crimes can happen pretty much anywhere at any time in LVV. Note that the markers represent incidents that ended in fatalities only and do NOT include other violent crimes like rapes and home invasions where people didn't die.

Perhaps someone can copy this map and update it to include 2020 homicides using data here:

https://www.lvmpd.com/en-us/Homicide...sesByYear.aspx

Note that the link above does not include closed homicide cases. For this, you'll need to rely on other sources like these:

https://www.cityofhenderson.com/news/releaselist
https://www.ktnv.com/news/crime/inte...valley-in-2018
https://www.ktnv.com/news/interactiv...alley-for-2019 (2020 version should be
published in 2021)
https://www.reviewjournal.com/crime/homicides/

There's also this classic one, but I wouldn't rely on it anymore since it's based on stats from a decade ago (89011, for example, wouldn't be green today):

Crime in Las Vegas

I read somewhere that insurance companies base their rates on crime statistics per zip code such as provided by this tool by ADT Security:

https://www.adt.com/crime

Sure enough, I entered 89011 and it was red instead of green.

Other tools that I've come across which I found useful:

A truism. Valid everywhere in the world. If you had taken the time to zoom in you could have seen that many neighborhoods have zero or one incident.

Yes, these could be considered the good areas.

There are definitely hotspots where homeless people and crime occur a lot. Owens, Nellis, and certain areas in East Vegas.

The market is pretty intelligent overall, not too many people paying high prices to live in bad areas. It isn't always perfect, but what people are paying for housing and/or rent compared to marketwide average is a pretty good indicator of how generally safe or unsafe an area is.

Further my experience has been that certain apartment complexes, or the presence of a lot of rentals, drives up crime rates. Once again it isn't a perfect rule, but you'll almost always find hotspots are at their root caused by lower cost rentals bringing in the wrong crowd.

UPDATE: I guess I had a little free time on my hands, so I took the map from 8newsnow.com and added data points up to 2020, and it will be continuously updated.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/ed...-8&usp=sharing

Furthermore, I have added links to the sources so you can read more about the incident. The map looks like a blood bath when zoomed out, but that's misleading -- once you zoom in to where you see outlines of buildings, it's not too bad. For the most part, if you don't go looking for trouble at 3am in the seedy areas, then you'll be all right :-).

It think it should be noted that the map includes data going back 4 years (2017).

e The Vegas valley seems to be like a quilt unlike other metro areas I have lived in

Seems you can drive a couple blocks or turn a corner and go from a nice area to something pretty sketchy just that quick. Downtown VS the Scotch 80s come to mind for example

You really don't know until you have been there in person

I also think there can be huge differences in how truthfully and completely an area reports crime

And also consider North Las Vegas and Las Vegas being separate and distinct. Watch out for the NLV police, especially if you are a white man with expensive shoes leaving a casino and flick your cigarette into the road...

At that point, you have entered into a dystopian surreal alternate reality where Montezuma's revenge takes on a whole new meaning.
