Hi everyone. I'm new to the city and new to the message board.

I moved out here in January and so far for some reason have not been able to find a job. It's becoming very frustrating and depressing. I know that sounds incredible but hear me out.

It's not that I haven't been looking. I started out feeling very optimistic. But it seems that whenever I walk into a place they tell me "apply online". I spend 1-3 hours on line applying for one job only to never hear from these places again. And I pour over the want-ads.

I'm starting to think that this idea of Las Vegas being a wide-open employment heaven is a bit of a stretch. Things were bad in Ohio but this is annoying, especially when you see people employed in the most strangest jobs and they seem very happy with them. I have a very solid work history with no problems.

And yet I see people all over with jobs. So what's the magic secret?

Want-ads (and other online job sites): This is the worst and most frustrating way to find a job. It's so passive. Plus, there's tons of crap jobs (like telemarketing) or jobs that want lots of experience. The Review Journal lists over a hundred pages of jobs but I'm getting to the point where this just seems like a waste of my time. And every other unemployed person in the area is also going to them. I'm spending so much time filling out these online applications and taking their tests that it's driving me crazy when I never even hear from them again.

Casino jobs: they all say 'apply online". When you look online there are a lot fo basic $7.00 jobs. I see surveillance and security a lot. But once again when I do the "apply online" thing I think I would be better off just throwing my application into the wind to see where it winds up. What's the best way to get hired here?

Construction. How does one get a simple construction job around here? There's nothing in the paper--they all want engineers with a minimum of 8 years in aerospace technology or something.

McDonald's: honestly, I don't want to resort to working at a fast food place. But is this an accepted part of the typical Vegas career track? That guy in the suit and tie at the Venetian started out as a fry cook at Burger King?

I don't get it. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? What's the magic formula?

And how long would it take on average to get a decent job around here?

I would like some true local feedback. Constructive comments only, please--I don't need anything that makes me even more confused.

You could always go to a dealer school, I think they average around $600. I'm not positive but I think they only take a month or two and then when you complete the training they place you in a job. It might be worth looking into. If you get into a dealer position, I would think there would be decent career advancement opportunities, pit boss, etc...

Who told you Las Vegas was a "wide open" job market?

Considering the amount of people that are still moving here, it's a very competitive market, even for the lowest paying jobs. And especially here in Las Vegas...for the better positions...experience is what they're looking for. And the suits are in their positions because they went to college, got the necessary degree, maybe worked themselves up in the company or somebody recommended them for their position.

You needed to secure employment here before you left Ohio. Another thing about Las Vegas employers is that they tend not to hire folks new to the area. They'll go with someone who shows they've been here a while, over a newly tranplanted person. Just repeating what I've heard from others, I don't know how true that is.

Perhaps you can get some temp work (to help you get some money), you never know when an employer who uses a temp, might want you full time permanently, if you've done a good job.

In any event, you need to work and eat...here's some agencies to look at, I don't know your field of expertise...hope it helps you. Good luck!

#1 NOT a wide open job market....BUT the jobs are out there....
#2 Dealers schools do NOT place you. They MAY, on occassion, secure an audition. That's the BEST they do...Dealers schools are there to teach you the basics and take your money.
#3 YES, MOST of the hotels have gone to the "Online Application" Make sure you have everything written down when you go to apply. Make sure everything is in chronological order with NO, ZERO, 0 Gaps in employment.....that simply means make sure you can account for the last 10 years.
#4 YES, many of the entry level jobs start with a crappy hourly rate...sorry.....

Good luck on the hunt.....

No, those real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and home builders made plenty of money in the boom----too bad if they are suffering now. Those that will suffer are the "new" service industry workers, and recent arrivals hoping to find work in the "booming" (not) LV economy.

Exactly. One of the neighbors up at my rental near Summerlin, is a valet at Santa Fe, he told me about it. He said quite a few of the new hires from his dept were let go.
