Now that they are faced with their own possibility of death, instead of doing the right thing and taking shelter while passing the reigns to the younger who are likely to survive, they'll just burn it all down and go down with the ship. That way, they get to retain control.

I also would add that the amount of all types of debt they have saddled younger generations with is unconscionable. There is no excuse for people in this country to be waiting in lines which are miles long right now to get food. Here is a recent story from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

That is a line of cars, not a line of people. And they are waiting for free food. Not bad looking cars either.
