Hi everyone. I am new to this forum, although I've been reading posts for about a week. I must say that I have found many of you to be extremely helpful and friendly, which is one point in favor of moving to Vegas. The majority of posters here do a fine job representing the city, for which I am grateful. Moving on to the point of my post: I am wondering if it is significantly more difficult to get a front desk/entry level management position at a hotel in Las Vegas if you have hotel experience rather than a degree in hospitality management. If any of you guys who are in the hotel industry can help me out with this I would be very grateful. Thanks again for giving me a great first impression of you lovely city. I hope to get to know you all better in days to come.

But knowing someone in the hotel is always a huge plus. Won't get into alot of properties on the strip otherwise. Front desk on the strip is good pay and tips so in high demand. New to town? Look at one of the locals only places and you will have a better chance. My wife was a manager of a 5 star/4 diamond property in Denver and was turned down by almost every property in town (she was applying for front desk). I was hired as security at the Venetian and pulled some strings to get her in. Now she is a concierge and says the front desk is like a popularity contest with management, thats all.

Well, I may have an advantage as I am currently employed at a hotel in my small town that is owned by a company with a hotel in Vegas. I work at a Hampton Inn, and the newest Hampton Inn on Tropicana/Dean Martin just happens to be owned by the same company I work for now. I am hoping that initially I can just transfer to Vegas and since I'll have a job already I can look around and I'll have time to work my way into the nicer strip hotels. Thanks for the input

I would apply just the same. I worked in a large casino for ten years and they hired many front desk managers with little to no experience. Most of them were idiots and did not last long, but they got the job and that is the point.

if you have front desk experience [particularily in large systems such as as400/LMS you're a shoe-in....] if your experience is in Opera....then the chances are less but still there.....
