For the amount of hotels in Vegas, are there many openings for front desk type positions? I'm currently working at a Homewood Suites in Alaska and plan on moving down to Vegas soon and am wondering if a front desk hotel job is worth looking for with the economy the way it is there. I'll have about 9-10 months of experience with solid references by the time I get moved down there. I'm assuming that jobs at the larger hotels on the strip are pretty tough to get. Any insight on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

There is, but the competition is fierce as in you might have 100 other people competing for the same position. You might want to try applying online first.

It's more like 1,000 or more people applying for the same job.

Is that pretty much any job there or are hotel jobs highly sought after in general there?

It is basically any job. Unfortunately, Las Vegas has the highest unemployment rate in the USA, second only to detroit.

yes, it is very hard to get anything.. it is no longer a walk in and get a job... plus if you have any skeletons in your closet, even poor credit.. that makes things even harder

Right now there are so many people fighting for the same job, and right now it's who you know. If you come make sure you have enough money saved up to last a year if you don't find employment or under employment.
Best thing is right now is to stay where you are, these are not the times to be moving around.

Most of the hotel front desk jobs are on call. One strip hotel I applied for a P/T position and at the interview they told me they rotate 80 people a week for shifts. They also allowed highest seniority to pick their shifts leaving whatever is left for newcomers. Basically, one week i could be working graveyard, the next week swing, the week after graveyard again...etc... Wasn't really what I was looking for but if you have the flexibility to do so and need a job, go for it. Just my opinion though, the economy is too unpredictable right now to be taking on a new position and starting at the bottom of the ladder.
