I will soon be a RN so I would like to know of some good hosptial names in the area. Also, My son will be in elementary school soon, so which school district is best. Is this a good family friendly city? Is there much to do? What is the average temp like in summer/winter. Shopping?? Lastly if anyone has ANY pics I would be sosososoososo greatful! Thanks for taking the time to help me!!

I am glad that you are considering Vegas for your relocation. I am in medical sales and sell in every hospital in town. For my money, you can't go wrong with the St. Rose Dominican Hospitals as an RN. They have 3 campuses in all with 2 located right in Henderson. They provide great nursing education and seem to have top notch clinicians on staff. They are part of the CHW hospital group. In terms of education & family oriented, Las Vegas is what you make of it. If you live in Henderson (zips 89052, 89014,89074, for example) you will find good schools and great recreation activities & parks. Folks will badmouth schools here, but something to remember is that Clark County (Las Vegas) has one massive school system including 200+ elementary schools alone - so test scores get lumped together. Bottom line: live in a good area and you will have good schools. Where are you moving from?

Well we are in Virginia right now due to the millitary...He has a chance to re-enlist with base preference. We are originally from California and there are not any bases we are too interested in there. We want to be close enough to home (5 hours Max), its been hard enough being away, but we dont think we want to move back to California. I have been doing my research and Henderson seems like a really neat place, there is a base and its about 4 hours from home! ONE PROBLEM...I have never been there I am excited and really looking for a new adventure, we are very open to change! So I appreciate your post...I will deffinetly look into that St. Rose Dominican, thanks for the lead...REALLY aprreciate the positive post. Its so easy to hear so much negativity on these things... :P

I think you will find a lot of options here in Henderson. For outdoor activities, the city has developed several trails around the area. Also every few months, the city publishes a magazine called Henderson Happenings that provides info on all the recreation classes at the recreation centers located throughout the city. I highly recommend taking advantage of the Rec. centers! Fitness classes, art, cooking, and other enrichment programs are available. And it is a great way to meet people.

For your son, if he requires before/after school activities if you are at work, the city offers Safekey, which is like a day care program. My 9 year old cousin has been in that program since he started elementary school, and he has always enjoyed it. Now that he is older, he has more options, like a summer camp type of program.

The Henderson Pavilion is a newer venue in Green Valley Ranch located by The District shopping center, it's an outdoor amphitheater, with concerts and other productions.

So, I would say this is a family-friendly city and there is much to do, and you don't even have to set foot in a casino.

Oh, and in summer, your son can enjoy the water parks that are at some of the city parks. Since it will be HOT - be prepared for 115 degrees in August.

For shopping - you have all of Vegas at your disposal, so you don't have to go far to find what you are looking for. But there is a mall in henderson, plus several shopping centers around the city.

Well thanks so much...so is Green Valley a housing community in Henderson? Is that a better place to live? So I understand the summers are very hot...what about the winters and springs? Does it ever cool down?

Green Valley is a masterplanned community in Henderson. So there are many housing developments in that community. The original GV is getting, well, old, in my opinion. I don't think it is any better than other parts of the city. Green Valley Ranch is a newer section of that area, toward the far south side, up against the mountains.

Winters average in the 50s during the day. We get at least 1 day of the year when it snow, but just a light dusting. It can dip into the 30s at night. Right now its 70. Spring is in full swing here, 70s and 80s are normal.

Yeah I think you could say weather is similar to AZ - southern AZ like Phoenix. But I think southern AZ can get hotter than us.

I've only driven through Reno, so I have no idea what it would be like to live there. Weather is different, since you are up north, you get snow. It isn't a desert up there. You are close to Lake Tahoe, which is beautiful. I don't think there is anything exciting in Reno itself if you were to consider moving there. But most of us Vegas residents are biased against Reno, I'm sure. But I have no experience to go on.

Reno is 7 hours away, so it's not a good comparison - usually one wouldn't be deciding between moving to Vegas or Reno.
