I'm moving to Henderson towards the middle of next month to start a new job. I did a driving tour of some apartment complexes after I completed the interview for my new employer and had some questions I was hoping some of you might be able to help with.

1.) I'm planning on moving into a new apartment complex built within the past two years and it seems there are quite a few being built or soon to be built. Do renters have much leverage in Henderson? It seems that the new complexes don't have many specials listed, but they didn't seem full when I drove by.

2. I'm planning on getting furniture at Ikea/Target. Are there any other furniture stores with a similar price range that I should be looking at?

3.) I read on Reddit that tinting your front driver and passenger windows is legal due to the extreme heat. Is that indeed the case?

4.) I'll need to get my vehicle smogged before registration. It seems Jiffy Smog is the most prevalent and just wanted to get your guys feedback on whether I should stick with them or if there were suggestions for other places.

5.)I have Sprint as my cell carrier. How is reception throughout the Valley?

6.) Everyone is complaining about Cox internet. I need a fast internet connection and it seems that Cox is the way to go for the most part compared to Centurylink. Just wanted to confirm that or get your feedback.

7.) I can't seem to find the best sites to seek out groups/social clubs/sports to join. Everything on Facebook seems inactive and too many results come up on google/twitter.

Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to add anything you would like. I'll make sure to keep you guys posted throughout my move. Thanks in advance for all your help and thanks for all the posts on this forum.

I can only answer a few,
Tint is legal I don't recall the specific percentage any Tint Shop should be able to steer you right.
Smog places are all the same find the one closest to you with the shortest line (or the cheapest).
I have sprint it's not the best, but works.
Realistically cox is the only game in town.

Can't help you on this one.

2. I'm planning on getting furniture at Ikea/Target. Are there any other furniture stores with a similar price range that I should be looking at?

You get what you pay for. Ikea furniture is bought mostly because it is cheap not because it is quality.

3.) I read on Reddit that tinting your front driver and passenger windows is legal due to the extreme heat. Is that indeed the case?

I believe that you can do about a 50% tint legally, but many people do a much darker tint than is legal and never get ticketed for it. The only problems you might have is if you drive down to SoCal.

4.) I'll need to get my vehicle smogged before registration. It seems Jiffy Smog is the most prevalent and just wanted to get your guys feedback on whether I should stick with them or if there were suggestions for other places.

Jiffy Smog is as good as anywhere. If you are moving from out of state, your car will be inspected at DMV for safety before registration can be issued so if you have a cracked windshield or bald tires, need to fix that before you go there.

5.)I have Sprint as my cell carrier. How is reception throughout the Valley?

Don't know, but I suspect it's okay.

6.) Everyone is complaining about Cox internet. I need a fast internet connection and it seems that Cox is the way to go for the most part compared to Centurylink. Just wanted to confirm that or get your feedback.

I have Cox and no problems on my internet, my gripe with them is about cable tv.

7.) I can't seem to find the best sites to seek out groups/social clubs/sports to join. Everything on Facebook seems inactive and too many results come up on google/twitter.

No idea.

Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to add anything you would like. I'll make sure to keep you guys posted throughout my move. Thanks in advance for all your help and thanks for all the posts on this forum.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

i had many issues with Sprint when we moved her 17 years ago. Times change, maybe they got their act together.Been with AT&T and Verizon no isues.

Cox does have issues but it depends on where. We recently had cox out, they were installing new equipment. I aksed what is up with this. he says older sections of town might have issues. I gave him my friends area, called section 10. he say Oh yeah that is one area we might have issues in. She changed to Century Link and its even worse.

If you are going to be living in a newer area, you might be one of the lucky ones.

I suffer from allergies. I can not go into an IKEA store cause of the smell of glue and what ever they use to throw together their products. I'm wondering what all those chemicals they use to create their crap would do to a kids lungs etc long term.

Go to Collen's Classic Consignment. This is gently used stuff. Some of it is excellent quality. Don't be in a huge hurry to get everything now. We sent two leather sofas over there that were Handcock and Moore. We had them 10 years and paid $6,000.00. We were redecorating, got $1100.00 for them. No pets here no kids. Looked almost like new. Lots of people redecorate in the fall for the holidays. They have a few stores. They also get stuff from the furniture mart after the design shows.

Started with Century Link when we moved here, couldn't wait for the contract to expire! It was bad, one time we were without internet for over 3 days. Cox has it's problems, but it's the only one unfortunately.

You are probably going after modern furniture. The other larger furniture retailers, Walker's, Big's, RC Willey has some modern pieces but more expensive.
Vizion Furniture sells Scandinavian contemporary pieces but again, more expensive and any smaller independent store will be pricey.

old and new complexes do have specials, but not all of them. shop around

2. I'm planning on getting furniture at Ikea/Target. Are there any other furniture stores with a similar price range that I should be looking at?
there are also furniture outlet stores, craigslist, and sales going on elsewhere. you will need to do the legwork. i would start here:
Shop Smart Circulars

4.) I'll need to get my vehicle smogged before registration. It seems Jiffy Smog is the most prevalent and just wanted to get your guys feedback on whether I should stick with them or if there were suggestions for other places.
go for the cheapest. there are often coupons online. here's one for $12:
Auto Service & Repair | Las Vegas, NV | Purrfect Auto Service

5.)I have Sprint as my cell carrier. How is reception throughout the Valley?
i was ok with sprint. it does not have the best coverage however, it just depends on where you will be most of the time. for me i almost always had very good lte reception. i am with tmobile now (mint sim) and it's a little better and faster

6.) Everyone is complaining about Cox internet. I need a fast internet connection and it seems that Cox is the way to go for the most part compared to Centurylink. Just wanted to confirm that or get your feedback.
yes stick with cox. no point gambling with centurylink unfortunately. Cox have sign up specials that are usually good for the first 12 months. then they jack up the rate unless you call in and complain

Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to add anything you would like. I'll make sure to keep you guys posted throughout my move. Thanks in advance for all your help and thanks for all the posts on this forum.
Additionally, you should register your move with usps and sign up for the offers with mymove.com they will often provide some useful coupons.

1. Just like the purchase market, the rental market is tight. You will not have much leverage. However, rents here are still very reasonable.

2. If you want cheapie furniture try Hollywood Furniture. They have several stores. I have heard the customer service isn't fantastic, however.

3. Here is the Nevada Revised Statutes on window tint. But the tint retailer should be able to guide you. https://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-...#NRS484DSec440

4. Smog in Nevada is easy--depending on the year of the vehicle, they don't even check tailpipe emissions. It is a bit of a scam in my opinion. As others have said, they are almost all the same. You can usually find coupons for "Smug Busters" online

5. I have Sprint, works well for me. All carriers have some dead spots in various areas of town.

6. Cox is super fast for me, download. I pay for 150MBPS and I get 170+. Unfortunately cable is asymmetrical so uploads are much slower.

7. I've never used it but meetup.com seems to be popular.

Good luck!

With regard to question 7, Meetup.com is a good resource for finding local groups of people who share your interests. There are many active local Meetup groups.

THANK YOU for being intelligent enough to first just come out here on your own & get a feel for the area, rather than not do that, & just expect the people here to write books for you!

1.) I'm planning on moving into a new apartment complex built within the past two years and it seems there are quite a few being built or soon to be built. Do renters have much leverage in Henderson? It seems that the new complexes don't have many specials listed, but they didn't seem full when I drove by.

Housing prices are starting to creep-up, so I guess that means more people will be starting to look for an apartment rather than a house. If you're single & new to the area, being in a nice apartment complex that has a lot of people in your same demographics could help with socialization. Keep in-mind that some nice houses in nice areas can be rented for around the same price as a nice apartment though.

2. I'm planning on getting furniture at Ikea/Target. Are there any other furniture stores with a similar price range that I should be looking at?

Vegas can be a pretty transient area so as others suggested, check Craigslist too, and while I don't know of any specific resources, it's possible that some nice casino is going to be auctioning-off various furnishings as part of an upgrade. RC Wiley & Walker's are the big furniture stores around here & unless you know your budget is really, really low, check them to get an idea on prices/quality before you resort to something like Target or Ikea. Some of the nice places will include free delivery & setup for the furniture, which may make it a better deal than the particleboard junk at Ikea & Target.

3.) I read on Reddit that tinting your front driver and passenger windows is legal due to the extreme heat. Is that indeed the case?

There's a legal limit, and it's much less for the front windshield than other windows. Keep in-mind that tint is actually different than UV protection. You'll want both, and for quality work, it's not going to be cheap. I had it done a couple years ago. Took about 3 hours/cost $325. That was much more $$ than I wanted to spend, but it does make a big difference. Places know the legal limit, they'll tell you the legal limit, and if you want to go past the legal limit they'll do it. But some NHP & local LE Traffic Officers have window tint testing devices. I don't know they can pull you over just for window tint investigation (primary violation) but if they pull you over for something else, and especially if you're a jerk to them, it's not difficult for them to check the tint percentage & cite you if it's over the legal limits.

4.) I'll need to get my vehicle smogged before registration. It seems Jiffy Smog is the most prevalent and just wanted to get your guys feedback on whether I should stick with them or if there were suggestions for other places.

Usually you can find a coupon & have it done for about $25 in 5 minutes or less. Go somewhere convenient.

6.) Everyone is complaining about Cox internet. I need a fast internet connection and it seems that Cox is the way to go for the most part compared to Centurylink. Just wanted to confirm that or get your feedback.

Usually no one is ever totally pleased with their cable/internet/phone service provider, if for no other reason, the price. I pay about $250/month for Cox & am I happy about it? Hell no... They'll try to sell you a bundle of services & tell you that it'll save you money. Let the sales person know you're not buying into that BS & if they keep playing that game, you'll go with CenturyLink instead. You may find an apartment complex that has basic cable/internet included in the rent, and/or check with a neighbor to see if they want to split a wifi connection with you... Most of the area digital TV transmitters are up on Black Mountain (here in Henderson) so you could initially save $$ by not getting cable TV & see if you're happy with over the air TV reception & programming or streaming A/V via internet. Note though that when it's 110 degrees (or hotter) outside for pretty much every day in July, August, September & cools-off to the 90s at night, you may find that you're hibernating inside your air-conditioned apartment watching TV more often than you'd do in a more moderate climate, so TV with a DVR full of shows is pretty nice to have around here.

7.) I can't seem to find the best sites to seek out groups/social clubs/sports to join. Everything on Facebook seems inactive and too many results come up on google/twitter.

That'll happen when you get here. City of Henderson has some decent community rec centers. Private health clubs like Las Vegas Athletic Center may be nicer, but they seem to almost always be packed (their parking lots are...) & if you're talking about buying furnishings at Target, you shouldn't be talking about joining LVAC...

Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to add anything you would like. I'll make sure to keep you guys posted throughout my move. Thanks in advance for all your help and thanks for all the posts on this forum.
Henderson is mostly beautiful. There are some ghetto areas that fit the usual stereotype & some apartment complexes have a lot of problems caused by just a couple tenants. Nothing personal, but Henderson is growing too much, too fast, and thus certain avenues are way too busy/infrastructure is being overwhelmed so for every one person that moves here, I do wish one person would move away, but... HAVE FUN!
